Tankinis are swimsuits that give more coverage by combining a tank top and a bikini bottom. Like bikinis they are usually made of spandex-and-cotton or Lycra-and-nylon. Tankinis are usually preferred as they give a bit more coverage, sun protection and modesty while still being sexier than a full one-peice swimsuit, but will limit tanning. They are also a lot less likely to let anything pop out making them usually more suitable for beach sports such as volleyball. Tankinis were a relatively late invention in the bikini scene being only introduced in the late 1990s.
