Flip flops tend to be pretty casual affair, but these ones are more sophisticated than the average. Metallic leather is always a fun after five choice, especially when it's dressed up with amber jewels. I'm not suggesting you should take them to a fancy soiree, but they'd certainly look the part at a pool party or casual restaurant. And if bronze isn't your color you can choose from five other alternatives including matte black and white and metallic silver and pink. While I think bronze is the pick it's always lovely to have a few options.

While these Chlementine flip flops are designed to turn heads, they're also really smart. The three-quarter inch heel adds just enough style without sacrificing comfort. The grippy diamond-patterned rubber soles ensure you stay upright on slippery pool decks or other wet surfaces. The soft suede footbeds have cushy memory foam inlays to ensure they're comfortable even at the end of a long day.

It's rare to find a pair of flip flops that are so functional and fierce. It's even rarer to see them priced affordably. At $59 these beach shoes are a real bargain.

Guess has taken a traditional rubber pair of flip flops and girlified it. More rubber makes an oversized structured bow, which is further feminized with a swarm of rhinestones at the center. And as if these shoes couldn't be any sweeter, they come in a cute candy pink! It's not our only choice; the black and gray options are far more subdued. But why would you try to be subtle with flip flops like the Tutu?

When we start to dissect them the Tutu flip flops aren't the most practical pair of flip flops. The rubber and synthetic materials have what it takes to survive the harsh conditions of the beach, but Guess hasn't done an awful lot with them. The sole is simple and flat; it doesn't cushion and grip your feet as many more expensive flip flops do. The synthetic straps also won't feel especially comfortable on our feet. These are really flip flops for girls who love lazing around on the beach, rather than women up for beach volleyball and walks along the shore.

For $35 though we really can’t ask for more. The Tutu isn't the most practical pair of flip flops you'll ever own, but it might just be the cutest!

This is really a back to basics pairs of beach shoes, with its brown rubber sole and the gentlest of heels. The simple sole isn't contoured or ergonomically designed as many are either. In fact, if it weren't for the white logo emblazoned on the foot bed I'm not sure I'd have recognized the Lilliana came from the designer stable at all.

That's not to say that the Lilliana flip flops are without charm. The braided straps might not be revolutionary, but the combination of brown and soft gold is quite alluring. I also appreciate the white and silver version, but the all-back Lillianas are a bit pedestrian. The straps are made from synthetic rather than real leather, so they're not going to feel especially soft on your feet, but they do dress up the beach shoes a little bit.

I don't expect real luxury for $39, and I don't really want it in my beach shoes. Instead it's more important that the flip flops can survive the harsh conditions of the beach and look cute while they're doing it. And on those scores, these Lilliana sandals definitely deliver.

Ordinarily I find Teva shoes a bit chunky with their supportive straps and cushy, thick soles, so I was excited to see the label take a more traditional approach to these Toolani Flip Flops. Without all of those practical bells and whistles, we're given a pair of flip flops that are chic and simple.

Teva fans should be prepared to make a few compromises though in the name of fashion. While the thinner sole looks more stylish, it doesn't have that lovely, squishy comfort we're used to. You'll certainly feel the difference in shock absorbency when running along the beach or playing a game of volleyball. The webbed straps are just as soft and comfortable as we'd expect though, so if you're not overly active on the beach then the Toolanis may suit you just fine.

These flip flops are cheaper than most Teva shoes, but I'm not sure the label's even done enough to command its $25. In many ways these flip flops aren't too different from the stock standard flip flops you'll find at Walmart or any other cheap department store. Teva's faithful swear they're more comfortable, but the jury's still out on this one.

A gleaming silver ring proudly, and perhaps obnoxiously, bears the Fendi name. It sits loud front and center, boasting about the flip flops' heritage smugly. Some girls will go mad for that, but it's all a bit obvious for me.

Still, when you're paying almost $400 for a pair of beach shoes you probably want everyone to know why. It's a way of getting some kind of value for your dollar, although I'd suggest it doesn’t go nearly far enough.

Strip away the logo and you've got a fairly disappointing pair of shoes. The skinny straps are made from patent leather, a hard material that's bound to rub against your feet. The soles are made from a combination of leather and rubber. It's a smart mix for the beach, as rubber gives the shoes essential water-resistant properties, but it should come much cheaper than this.

Honestly the only thing I'm really revved by is the color. This bright white leather will look gorgeous against deep tanned legs or summer sundresses when you step away from the shore. Few colors have such a timeless tropical feel, and for this money that timelessness is essential!

I can't see real value here though; I've seen many simple pairs of white flip flops that are far less costly. But they don't bear the Fendi name, and that will make all the different for designer junkies.

You know no one who does their shopping at the mall will have a pair of these handmade, hand-painted sandals crafted in the hills of Central Bali. Balinese villages and families often share in the work of creating each piece of this shoe, from the rubber sole with foam cushioning to the cloth straps to handcut patterns and painted designs.

The fact that these flip flops are fair trade means that the village artisans are being paid a fair wage for their work and you're helping out the communities that produced the item you're buying. Somehow I don't think the same can be said for many of the mass-produced rubber flip flops.

These sandals come in four colors each with their distinct artistic colorings. The brown sandal shown features a pattern in a variety of sea blues and greens with yellow and orange accents. Burgundy features a similar pattern in a variety of desert earth tones. White features beachy blues, and red is detailed with firey oranges and yellows.

I might not wear these by a muddy lake or a messy touristy beach, they're too nice for that! They'd look fabulous with a casual sun dress and are sure to get lots of compliments.
