This mottled pattern is a little bit different than the tortoiseshell your grandma favored. It's rendered with a tinge of cranberry red, rather than the basic brown we're used to. That makes it feel a little bit more modern, despite the retro shape of the frames.

Chanel stamps its designer heritage on the sunglasses with brushed golden nameplates near the temples. These are embossed with Chanel's famous interlocking Cs, but the signature is much smaller than I've seen it elsewhere. If you're a fan of logos, that may disappoint you. However if you prefer a more understated luxury it's a very good thing.

I rarely enjoy showy logos, but I'm also disappointed that there's not more pointing to these sunglasses' pedigree. After all, when you're paying $450 for the privilege of wearing these babies you want everyone to know why!

I like the style, but I still can't see value here. Chanel guarantees these sunglasses will keep the UVA and UVB rays at bay, but so do many other less expensive labels. I wouldn't mind splurging if I felt the shades were truly luxurious, but instead they're made from plastic. They might have Italian ancestry, but there's little evidence of that European sophistication here.

These retro red sun shades are just like the ones that Sue Lyon wore as the fetching young temptress in Stanley Kubrick's classic film. That flick was made in the early 1960s, but the coquettish charms of these cute sunglasses haven't diminished over the decades.

These shades look the business, so I was thrilled to see their price tag. At just $10, they're a real steal. But of course, that meager amount of money doesn't buy luxury or fancy sun smart credentials.

These sunglasses are only made from plastic, so they may not last more than a season or two before snapping. The dark lenses are tinted to take care of glare from the sun, but they're not likely to block out too many UV rays. If you're counting on these to really protect your eyes from damage you may be sorely disappointed. On the plus side, plastic is very easy to take care of. Any spots or smears will simply wipe away with a damp cloth.

Whether you see value here depends on what you expect for $10? Personally, I'm just happy to see something looking so stylish for this kind of cash.

I don't mind admitting that my heart skipped a few beats when I spotted this particular pair of shades. The glossy red frames had me, with their cool curves and retro appeal. I love the way this vibrant hue is paired with the gray arms and smoky lenses. I also adore the discreet Chanel logos, a welcome change from those typically brash interlocking Cs.

Chanel claims that these are a unisex pair of sunglasses, but I can't imagine many men wanting to wear them. Instead they're bound to be popular with girls who favor vintage halter-neck swimsuits or retro spotted bikinis!

As is always the way with Chanel though, the price is the real kicker. At a whopping $329, I'm struggling to justify the expense. I'd be too worried about breaking these to ever throw them into my beach bag! However, if I was going to spend hundreds on a pair of sunglasses, these ones would be it.

Once upon a time, the Frogskins were the coolest sunglasses that money could buy. With the world celebrating everything 1980s, the surf label has re-issued the Frogskins as a limited edition range. This collection gives us all the looks we loved back then, with the modern perks we expect today.

My favorite color is this translucent green shade known as anti-freeze. That vivid hue may have been inspired by the gunk we put in our cars, but it works really well on a pair of shades. It's bright and summery, just the thing to add a pop of color to your beach wardrobe. There are many other options though, so there's bound to be a hue to suit your personality.

The retro cool looks are likely to suck you in, but it's worth noting all the features Oakley packs into these lightweight frames. They have Oakley's new three-point-fit system, which is more comfortable as it only touches the bridge of the nose and the sides of your head. The optically correct, single cut lenses ensure a true line of sight, so there's no excuse for missing that volleyball serve!

They were probably a lot cheaper back in the 80s, but the price of a little more than $100 isn't bad by modern standards.

If you love the look, and you've got the cash to spare, it makes sense to look to a luxury brand like Chanel for your bright white shades.

This 6022Q style features wide, white frames adorned with the distinctive CC logo on the temples. Those interlocking Cs are a bit large and showy for my tastes, although if you're wearing white sunglasses a little extra attention probably isn't unwanted! These eye-catching frames are paired with pale gray lenses, which are happily scratch resistant and guaranteed to offer 100% UVA and UVB protection. It's refreshing to see even the most stylish of accessories taking care of practical concerns!

That attention to detail might help convince you that these sunglasses are worth their $329 price tag, but I'm not so sure. That's an awful lot of money to spend on a trend which may not last longer than a season or two.

Ray-Ban have been producing the Wayfarer style since 1952 and they saw some popularity in the 1950's and 1960's, but their popularity peaked in the 80's, and have recently started making a come back. Unfortunately not everyone can afford the designer originals so here is a cheap alternative.

The best thing about this pair is the range of colors and patterns these shades come in, with both dark or clear lens options. For the price, you could order a few pairs to wear with different outfits to create a really coordinated or perfectly mis-matched look. They really allow you to customize your look and have something that not everyone on the street is going to be sporting despite the popularity of the style.

Keep in mind that at this cheap price you are getting what you pay for, plastic replica/knock-off sunglasses with a printed pattern that are not the "designer original" you may be after. That said, Amazon reviewers did judge that the plastic was heavy and durable.
