Volcom embraces its feminine side with this Flower Affair swim top.

This melon colored bandeau bikini top is exceptionally girly. The soft ruffle only runs along one side, but that's probably enough frills for most tastes. The large floral rosette in the center is another feminine touch. And of course, nothing says girly girl like a shock of sugary pink. The feminine effect is tempered a little in the aqua color, but only slightly. So I figure, why not go to extremes and make a real statement of girl power?

It's just a shame that Volcom's focused so much on the Flower Affair's surface appeal. Underneath that this bikini top is as basic as they come. There's no underwire beneath the bust, and no padding in the cups. You'll need to feel comfortable in your own skin to wear this swim top, because it'll do nothing to enhance your figure.

However perhaps we shouldn't expect too much. This bikini top is only $47.95 after all. That's a bargain for swimwear, especially when it's as well made as this Volcom bikini top. Its only frills are on the surface, but they'll be enough to impress girly girls with tight purse strings.

Freya Pier Bikini | Polka Dotted Black Halter-Neck Swim Top

Freya makes the most of curves with this cute Pier Bikini Top.

All too often plus sized labels look to dress their target audience in tents, so it's refreshing to see Freya offering something much sexier.

The Pier isn't skimpy but it sure is sizzling with its playful polka dots and feminine ruffles. The halter-neck style is flattering for any figure, but I think it works particularly well for curvy girls. Their natural assets are given a lift, while underwire underneath provides plenty of support. Underwire is never truly comfortable, but many women say this particular bikini feels better than most.

The Pier has a broad selection of sizes on the larger end of the spectrum, with girls from a C to a GG cup catered for. However it's worth noting that Freya uses United Kingdom sizes, rather than United States conventions. Conversion charts are available online, but generally a cup size larger than your average should suit.

The Pier is also available in a cute bubblegum pink shade, but I prefer the basic black version pictured. It's a more timeless option, and one which works better on women of all ages. Or perhaps at an affordable $68 you could just indulge in them both!

Stripy patterns are timeless, yet they always seem to look on trend. The unexpected color combination of bright pink and navy blue makes these wide stripes seem very fresh. The casual tie in the center aids this cause, scrunching in the top for a relaxed, modern style.

The Marcel is made from a blend of micro nylon and spandex. The dash of spandex gives the material the flexibility it needs to work for you in the water, while the micro nylon makes the suit soft and comfortable to wear. On the down side though, it requires hand washing to stay at its peak. That's a little more effort than many of us want to make on our summer vacation. Can you handle its upkeep?

Shoestring ties affix the bikini top around the neck and back. These ties aren't incredibly secure, but they do allow for the most comfortable fit. Its fit is also flattering for girls of all shapes too thanks to the removable soft cups in the bust.

At $55 I'd hardly call this bikini a bargain, particularly since you need to buy the bottoms to match it. However it's also not unreasonable for such a timeless swim top.

Reef Nailed It Bandeau Bikini | Stud Decorated Ruffled Yellow Swim Top

Reef has created a great blend of sugar and spice with this Nailed It bandeau bikini.

The playful ruffle along the top gives this swimsuit a flirty, feminine feel. But that's tempered a bit with the smattering of nailhead studs. The metal is delicate so it doesn't look quite as dangerous as studs often do, but its presence ensures we know this swimsuit isn't strictly a good girl.

Or at least it does in the right color. Honestly I think the pink shade is too saccharine for most women to take seriously. The black one is a solid timeless option, but it's also a bit predictable. Personally I prefer the summery feel of the bright ocean blue bandeau, or this cheerful yellow one.

Whichever one you pick you'll appreciate its features. The strap is removable, so we can attach it for security in the surf or detach it for tanning without the lines. The padding in the bust is also removable for that little bit more flexibility.

The range of sizes is very limited though. Unless you're a medium or a large you're out of luck. If you do fall into this average range though you'll enjoy the Nailed It's very affordable $32.95 price tag.

Ujena Sexy Savage Bikini | Pink & Black Mesh Two-Piece Swimsuit

Ujena is known for its sizzling bikinis, and with the Sexy Savage it may have created its hottest yet.

Mesh bikinis are always sexy, as the perforated fabric gives us a glimpse at the flesh that's hiding beneath. However the Sexy Savage is more cleverly executed than your average mesh bikini, as it's a little more conservative but also a bit wilder. Ujena doubles up the mesh, which affords us a bit more modesty. This material is slashed, almost as if it's been attacked by an untamed animal. This allows the black mesh to peek through and makes the swimsuit look primal, especially when paired with thin black string ties.

Just make sure you handle it with care. Mesh is notoriously fragile, prone to snagging and damage from tanning oils and chlorine. Make sure you wash it as soon as you wear it, by hand rather than a machine to prevent shrinkage. And don't even think about popping it in the dryer!

I don't think the double mesh will convince anyone who's not comfortable with their body though. This bikini's cut is almost scandalous, with little material covering our bust or derriere. That's great if you want to avoid tan lines and turn heads, but not ideal for self conscious beach goers.

As with all Ujena bikinis we can choose to purchase just the top, just the bottom, or the complete set in any size combination we like. That freedom allows us to find the most comfortable fit, no matter what our size or shape. And well it should for its fairly hefty $139 price tag! We don't get a lot of fabric for our dollar, but we do get a lot of style!

Gauze is also very soft and light to wear, which makes it perfect for humid, tropical destinations. It almost feels like you're wearing nothing at all, which is just how it'll look once it's wet!

As with all Ujena swimsuits, you can purchase the Slightly Sheer Gauze Bikini’s top and bottom separately, or mix and match the sizes for your perfect combination. Knowing you'll find just the right fit makes it a little easier to part with almost $100 for the swimsuit set.

It goes without saying that this isn't a swimsuit for anyone who isn't in touch with their most feminine of sides. Its shade of pink is so saccharine that diabetics probably shouldn't be near it, and its ruffled flower petals are equally frilly and frothy. It certainly won't suit everyone, but I don't think that's such a bad thing. It makes a strong style statement, and in the world of fashion that's to be admired.

The Bed of Roses isn't all style without substance either. Kenneth Cole backs up his design with underwire in the bust, and removable foam cups. You can also add a strap if you want a little extra support. This is a real blessing for water babies, as bandeaus are renowned for moving about in the waves. That shoestring strap might just help you avoid an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction!

As it's a separate you can happily mix and match this bandeau with your choice of bottoms. If your budget can cover it I recommend selecting one of Kenneth Cole's matching bikini bottoms. There are a few different designs to choose from, including the minimalist loop tie side briefs and the more flamboyant floral hipsters pictured.

Luli Fama Cosita Buena Bikini Top | Wavy Green Triangle Swimsuit

Luli Fama adds a little extra flair to the traditional triangle style bikini top with the Cosita Buena.

At its heart this is a classic triangle style bikini, but the wavy frilled edge gives it some individual style. These loose ruffles stop short of being overly feminine; instead they're sophisticated and chic. The jewel emerald green shade only adds to the Cosita Buena's good looks. There are some other color choices, but I think this is the pick of them. The black and charcoal hues are a bit pedestrian, while the lurid berry daring pink makes this swim top look like something Barbie might wear.

Luli Fama's twist on the traditional triangle bikini style drew me in, but the label's also added a few practical features to keep me interested. The blend of nylon and spandex is designed for comfort and functionality. When you're in the water you'll find the fabric flexible, and when you emerge from the waves you'll notice how quickly it dries.

The triangles slide around for just the right fit, and there are removable cups to offer some extra padding in the bust. However, I have to wonder if these cups go far enough. They certainly haven't seemed to help the model any, so that's bound to make slender girls wonder.

At $73 this bikini top is expensive, so if you need some curve enhancement I suggest trying one on before committing.

NNW Swimwear leaves very little to the imagination with this daring micro string bikini.

This really is a bikini that requires an awful lot of confidence. If you look even slightly self conscious in it, the effect will be lost. If you love your body though, this is the perfect swimsuit for showing it off.

My reservations go beyond the modesty factor though. Rather than offering several different sizes, NNW Swimwear instead says that one size fits most. I always approach such tags with caution, as it's very difficult for a bikini to flatter a size two figure the same way it would a size 12.

It's also unlined, so don't be surprised if you reveal more than you intended once you get wet. I’m not sure whether that'll concern most of its fans though. That skimpy design seems like it's just waiting for a wardrobe malfunction, so many girls will feel happier keeping this suit on dry land.

This skimpy swimsuit certainly won't be to everyone's tastes, but if you've got the attitude to pull it off and the body to match you'll be happy to know it won't break the bank. At $32.99, this is quite an affordable swimsuit; perhaps that's not surprising considering it doesn't take a lot of fabric to make one!
