I must admit, this tankini isn't what I expected when I saw its name. The Tutti Fruti moniker conjures up images of flamboyant accents and wild rainbow colors. However this Tutti Fruti is quite subdued, with its subtle all-over shirring and elegant cobalt blue color.

The soft pleats are flattering, no matter what your figure. We tend to think of shirring as a handy detail for hiding lumps and bumps. It does that, but that's only half the story. If you're on the small side the feminine finish will actually create curves by adding volume rather than flattening your figure, as so many swimsuits do.

Its design looks effortless, but this Tutti Fruti swim top is actually working hard just beneath its surface. An inbuilt control panel helps to minimize tummy trouble spots, while underwire foam in the bust offers the support we need without compromising comfort.

At $94 this Profile by Gottex tankini is what you'd expect to pay for a swim top of this quality. It's no bargain, but its timeless design and high-quality finish ensures you'll see value for several summers to come.

The ongoing popularity of the Bowback can probably be attributed to its simplicity. The styling is very basic from the front, but turn it around and you'll find a little something special. Here you'll see an adjustable tie back which allows for just the right fit. There are also removable cups in the bust to give a boost to the girls that need it.

This Bowback is given a bit of extra flair with its Indian Swirl print. The eastern print is timeless but interesting. That's a rare mix to find! It might not seem as versatile as Athleta's plain matte colored Bowbacks, but you just need to think laterally. You could pair it with Athleta's bottoms as the model's done, or a basic black pair of briefs or board shorts.

It's not the most fashion forward tankini you'll see on the beach, but for $34.99 it is one of the cheapest.

The thick red and white stripes around the bust are paired with thinner stripes below. The effect is nautical, without being as obvious as an anchor print! It's also youthful but not childish, a blessing for the young at heart amongst us!

It's called a teeny tankini, but that's probably overstating the point. Roxy does make this swim top in medium and large sizes, so while plus-sized beach lovers will miss out, you don't have to be stick thin to wear it.

The element that makes me pause most is those skinny black straps. They might work well on the black and white Hot Chip tankini, but in this sunset color combination, and the ceramic option, they seem really out of place.

Still, this is a minor misstep on a tankini which is quite reasonably priced at $46.

Even the most amateur fashionista knows that black is slimming, so it makes sense that Torrid's chosen the demure shade for this swimsuit. It's also given the tankini a conservative cut to give anyone self conscious of their size a bit more confidence. And goodness knows that no matter what your weight, sometimes its sexier to cover up and leave a little something to the imagination!

If it were just a black, conservatively cut tankini there'd be little special about this one. It gets its personality from the soft, floaty ruffles which decorate the bust. They're feminine and flirty but still mature, a blessed combination for sophisticated beach lovers. They also draw attention to the bust, which will be looking its best thanks to the lift that the halter-neck style provides. Torrid knows what a curvy woman's best assets are, and just how to maximize them!

This tankini will unfortunately take some looking after though. While many modern swimsuits can survive a trip through the washing machine, you'll need to hand-wash this one to keep it looking its best. But for the relatively affordable price of $48, I think this tankini's worth the extra effort.

The refusal to bend to the whims of fashion may make trend conscious beach goers pass it by, but it's got a timeless charm that shouldn't be overlooked. I love the way the gentle shirring under the bust helps the nylon/spandex fabric fall softly over the tummy, rather than clinging to unwanted lumps and bumps as so many tankinis do.

This swimsuit set doesn't show as much skin as a bikini would, but it's certainly sexy in its own way. Flat chested women will love the lift they get from the soft cups, while top heavy girls can remove them and let their natural assets do all the talking.

If you really want to show off your body though, this probably isn't the swimsuit for you. It's made with the more self-conscious beach goer in mind, with its full-coverage bikini bottoms and loose-fitting tankini top.

Unfortunately though, Calvin Klein doesn't accommodate the women who may want to wear this tankini most. With a 12 the largest size, many potential customers will sadly be left out in the cold.

Just a shade short of a perfect bikini body and want to hide that little bit of excess? The forgiving tankini is always there for you. And this one in dark colors with a subtle allover print will be flattering on most body types.

The Nikita Interesting Tankini is interesting indeed. I love the swirly, sort of sea-like print which is allover the top and present in a sort of waist-band trim on the otherwise solid bottom. I'm sure I can see a face in there somewhere so if a guy is staring at you don't just assume he's checking you out!

While the tankini obviously offers more coverage than your standard bikini, this one is pretty revealing at the bust with string-halter straps and a fairly open neckline. If you're long waisted, you'll probably be showing quite a bit of tummy between the top and the hipster bottoms as well. The bottoms have lots of side coverage but are low slung.

Tankinis are great if you already have a one piece and a bikini but want to add something else to your wardrobe. It's perfectly appropriate for a family cruise but still a little sexy.
