I can imagine Mad Men's Joan Holloway wearing this one-piece on a Californian getaway. The swirling bandeau style bust, spotted finish, and cute ruffled hemline give it a real pin-up girl vibe. I love the eye-catching appeal of this red suit, but traditionalists may prefer it in black.

It looks like you need the perfect hourglass figure to pull it off, but this swimsuit is more forgiving than you might expect. The soft shirring in the front and back helps to disguise any extra lumps and bumps. The molded cups help your curves look your best, and when you wear the removable neck strap they'll also enjoy a bit of a lift. That strap works double duty to provide extra security in the water, although I'd remove if you're sunbathing to avoid unsightly tan lines.

At $112 this tank swimsuit is no impulse buy, but it's also not unreasonable for such a well made pair of bathers. And unlike so many bikini tops, there's no more to spend to complete your beachside ensemble. If you hand wash it as Jantzen suggests you should enjoy several summers of compliments from this classic spotted swimsuit.

Freya Supernova Bandeau Swimsuit | Sexy Belted Black One Piece

Freya looks to make the dreams of comic books nerds everywhere come true with this Supernova Bandeau Swimsuit.

I can't help thinking of the costume of a kick ass female superhero, or perhaps even a super villain, when I look at this bold swimsuit. We've got the clean lines, the obligatory belted accent, and the flashes of gleaming gold. All we're missing is some thigh high boots and perhaps a cape!

The Supernova's looks are very distinctive but I don't think you need to be a geek to appreciate them. Its sleek styling is perfect for Freya's curviest fans. It offers fantastic support in the bust and it's sexy without being too provocative. The cups are lined but not padded, so girls don't feel they're serving their curves on a platter! The keyhole detail in the back ensures you'll make as much of an impression leaving as you do when you arrive!

The price made me double take. Surely it couldn't cost just $32, could it? Most times we can barely buy a bikini top for that, let alone an entire swimsuit. But there it is in black and white. I'd snap it up quickly before Freya realizes it's not charging enough!

Turning water into wine, feeding a crowd of people with only a few fishes and loaves of bread, and reviving people declared clinically dead are all miracles. Creating a slimming swimsuit doesn't quite seem to be in the same league, but the folks from Miraclesuit are just as proud of their Isabella swimsuit.

I'm not sure whether this swimsuit will really make anyone look ten pounds lighter as its creators claim, but the woman in the photo does look pretty amazing wearing it. I wish we had some before and after shots for comparison, but I can't fault her hourglass silhouette. I also appreciate the Isabella's styling, which is feminine but classic enough to suit women of any age. The soft ruffles cascading down the plunging neckline are complemented beautifully by the elegant pleats. The hidden Miratex control panel helps to smooth lumps and bumps while the soft cups in the bust enhance curves.

The colors leave a bit to be desired though. Black, navy blue, and brown are classic choices, but they're also a bit dark for summer. Some more playful hues would help this swimsuit appeal to younger girls.

At $146 this Isabella swimsuit is no bargain, but it's also not exorbitant either, especially if it lives up to its promise of a super slim figure!

This Miraclesuit Utopia one-piece has a name that's tough to live up to, but the figure-flattering label does its best to deliver.

I rarely believe in miracles, especially in the consumer world, but this swimsuit is very flattering. I'm not sure whether it really gives the illusion of dropping ten pounds, as Miraclesuit claims, but its Miratex fabric does a great job of smoothing your silhouette and minimizing trouble spots. And happily it does it without the stiff, uncomfortable panels we find in so many shaping swimsuits. Its secret is the material's unique blend, which has three times the spandex of other comparable one-pieces.

As for the Utopia tag, I'm not sure that's warranted either. It's not perfect, but its pin-head dots make the black material a lot more fun. They're youthful but not trend-conscious, so this swimsuit should look just as fresh after a couple of summers.

At $59 this one-piece is a real bargain. It's hard to find even a bikini top for that money, let alone a complete swimsuit that does so much for our bodies. Miraclesuit's swimsuits do run a little small though, so you may like to order one size larger than your usual for the most comfortable fit.

Tommy Bahama's taken a traditional black one-piece and given it a few fashionable and functional tweaks. A rhinestone studded metal O-ring near the bust adds just the right amount of sparkle.

That black fabric isn't as basic as it seems at first glance. Tommy Bahama has used premium Italian microfiber, a material known for its shape-retaining qualities. It's also comfortable to wear and quick to dry once you're out of the water. And if you treat it right, by hand-washing the suit in cold water and line drying, that bold black color will stay true for many seasons.

The Pearl's simple cut is softened with ruching around the bust and along the torso. These pleats add fashionable texture to the finish while also flattering the figure. You'll probably still need a bit of confidence to wear this swimsuit though. One-pieces with such plunging necklines are never for the faint hearted, although it's worth noting there are hidden cups in the bust to support and enhance your natural curves.

Considering its superior materials and timeless styling, I'm impressed that Tommy Bahama charges just $126.That price isn't exactly cheap, but many labels charge it for just a bikini top! Think of it as an investment in several summers of fun and it'll be easier to part with the cash.

A plunging neckline and cheeky keyhole cut-out help this Seductress swimsuit live up to its name.

It's those daring details that help ensure this black swimsuit is anything but basic. The golden accent at the bust is also lovely, and the cross-over straps at the back make sure we look just as good departing as we do on arrival.

I appreciate the way Trina Turk has struck the balance between sexy and sedate. The details I've mentioned are designed to attract a male gaze, but when you get down to it this swimsuit isn't too scandalous. The briefs provide ample coverage, and the dramatic neckline only reveals a hint of curves. This might just be the swimsuit to encourage conservative beach goers to dress a little more daring.

The price should help convince those sun lovers. At $135 it's quite reasonable, especially considering that Trina Turk charges close to that for only a bikini top! It's unusual to find an entire swimsuit from this designer for just a little more than $100, so why not seize the opportunity?

Just make sure you get it in black. It's also available in taupe, but that neutral shade is so drab that even the sexy details can't save it!

Splendid Bayside Swimsuit | Simple Sexy Black One-Piece Bathers

Splendid shows us the sex appeal of a simple swimsuit with the Bayside.

Its design is very basic, but its sexy cut gives it a bit of sizzle. The plunging neckline draws the eye while the backless rear ensures everyone will watch you as you leave. Its lines are very clean and sophisticated, but I wonder whether the design is too simple.

That's especially true of this basic black version. The color is a timeless choice, but it's also bland. The bright yellow underside provides a bit of a pop, but it's too understated to make any real impact. This swimsuit could be dressed up with a colorful hat, cover-up, or pair of board shorts, but worn like this it doesn't quite live up to its potential.

Looking at this model also makes me wonder whether Splendid's removable cups do enough. A plunging neckline is made for drawing attention to the bust, and any swimsuit with this style should make the most of curves. However there's barely a curve to be seen here. Some additional padding would have made all the difference.

It's hard to find a lot of fault with a swimsuit that costs just $97 though. Many swimwear labels charge that for a bikini top and expect us to spend more on briefs! It might be a bit boring, but the Bayside is also very affordable.

L*Space One Love Fringe Monokini | Quirky Cut-Out Fringed Black Swimsuit

L*Space brings back its beloved fringe with this One Love monokini.

We first saw this bohemian accent on the label's Miss Mojave Stardust swimsuit. I enjoyed it there, but when paired with a loud Aztec print it was never going to suit everybody. The One Love is like the Miss Mojave Stardust's more classic cousin, a black monikini with complementary fringing.

Don't mistake the One Love for a conservative option though. While the Miss Mojave Stardust was a traditional one-piece, this one is a much sexier monokini. Those large cut-outs can daunt anyone who's a little nervous about their beach body, but breathe easy. While the back is bare, the neckline is plunging, and the hips are exposed, the briefs actually have pretty generous coverage. Think about your problem areas and whether this swimsuit will really reveal them before you dismiss it out of hand.

Even if you've got the confidence to wear it, you'll need to look elsewhere if you're on the large side. L*Space seems to know which clientele it hopes to attract, as it only offers the suit in sizes extra small to medium. This sort of blatant size-ism is frustrating, but in such a revealing style perhaps it's for the best.

It might not give the illusion of dropping ten pounds as its tag line suggests, but this Aurora Swimsuit from Miraclesuit will certainly help you look a bit slimmer on the beach.

Unlike most of the Miraclesuit range, the Aurora features a soft, skirted bottom. It's gentle and feminine, and also helps to hide a multitude of sins. Forget about stressing over cellulite or extra pounds; they're all conveniently hidden underneath the soft black fabric.

Compression technology around the tummy area tucked everything in, while the gentle shirring and wraparound style does its best to conceal any bumps or bulges. These features cleverly create the right shape on the beach.

This swimsuit isn't all about hiding problem areas though; it's also designed to make the most of what you have. Soft cups in the bra help to support and lift curves, while the V-shaped neckline draws the eye. It plunges a little, but it's still conservative enough to look sophisticated.

I know dark hues are the most slimming, but I'm still a bit disappointed that Miraclesuit has opted for such a predictable color palette. Black and brown might be classics, but they're not going to wow. I guess you'll just have to hope your new Miraclesuit body can do that!

Island hopping may not be on your agenda this summer, but you can look just as glamorous as the frequent flyers when you're wearing this Jet Set swimsuit from La Blanca.

It's rare that a basic black swimsuit catches my attention, but La Blanca's done enough to make this simple, timeless style more memorable. A band of glittering gemstones draws your eye to the charming sweetheart style bust line. Its elegant ruching is mirrored down the side seams, a clever design technique which is both figure flattering and fashionable.

This one-piece is also more versatile than the average. When we're sunning ourselves, and wanting to avoid those nasty tan lines, we can remove the shoestring halter strap. It's easy to attach again when we need some extra support in the surf.

Considering how figure-flattering it is, it's a shame that La Blanca didn't cater for women typically more self-conscious about their figures. Sizes start at a tiny size four and stop at a 14, a size which is still much smaller than many beach goers. A few more sizes at the top end of the spectrum would definitely have broadened the Jet Set's appeal.

At $109 this one-piece is more expensive than many on the market, but I think La Blanca's done enough to justify the high price tag. It's fully lined, with soft cups in the bust, and all those little perks we expect from a luxury swimsuit.
