Marilyn Monroe has beat out contemporary beauties for the title of best bikini body.
The silver screen siren topped the poll commissioned by British department store chain Debenhams. Her figure was seen as more enticing than that of other vintage actresses like Raquel Welch and modern goddesses including Christina Hendricks, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, and Jennifer Aniston.
The results suggest that the waif look is on the way out according to Debehams spokesperson Sasha Nagalingham.
"Our results tell us that looking great on the beach is not about being the thinnest or the youngest woman around," she explained. "Women are increasingly appreciative of figures that symbolize all the great things about womanhood."
The results seem to reflect the current state of the fashion industry. We've started to see models speaking out about the pressure to stay rail thin. The Council of Fashion Designers of America has recently released health guidelines for catwalk models, yet we still hear that Victoria's Secrets models are encouraged to eat nothing but egg powder and water before a runway show.
I don't know about you, but that kind of deprivation doesn't sound like a lot of fun. I'd much rather eat up and have Marilyn Monroe's curves, wouldn't you?
