At first glance this crochet hat looks like the ideal combination of sophistication and sun smarts. However when it comes to the latter, we’re sadly let down. I love the look of the crocheted paper straw, but its distinctive holes will let in UV rays. On a cover-up or swimsuit we could simply lather on the sunscreen underneath, but it’s a lot harder when it comes to headwear. Your hair will provide a little protection, but I still expect sunburned scalps.
This sunhat’s brim also isn’t as wide as I’d expect. Customers have reported that it doesn’t adequately shade the face and neck, which makes it a bit useless in my books. While we’ve always got sunscreen on hand to do the job, why wear a hat if it doesn’t provide adequate protection?
I guess there’s a case to be made for style, but personally I expect a hat can look good while it’s keeping the sun’s rays at bay. That’s especially true for the price, which at $38 is no bargain. Jessica Simpson fans and anyone who’s more fashion conscious than sun smart might lap up this crocheted sunhat, but frankly I expect more for my money.
