Trina Turk’s New Banana Republic Line | Californian Designer’s Summer Capsule Collection

The capsule collections from Trina Turk just keep on coming. Hot on the heels of her Trina Turks and Caicos Collection for the Grace Bay Club Resort comes news of her latest line, a collaborative range designed with American leisurewear leader Banana Republic.

The 60-piece collection includes swimwear separates, beach towels and tote bags, and maxi-dresses and cut-off shorts for the times you're stepping away from the shore. The range's pricing is also more in keeping with Banana Republic's prices than Trina Turk costs. We can expect to pay around $60 for the beach towels while the bikini separates start from $58. Spending $120 on a pickering tote sounds a bit much to me, but I'll reserve judgment until I observe the carry-alls and their quality.

What I've seen of the collection seems like the perfect marriage of Banana Republic's safari style and Trina Turk's breezy Californian cool.

"We decided early on that the Palm Springs 'cocktails by the pool' lifestyle would be our key inspiration for the colors, styles, and prints," Turk explained.

Look for the Trina Turk for Banana Republic line in Banana Republic stores in America, Canada, Italy, France, Japan, Turkey, and South Korea this June. The retailer's online store will also dispense the goodies to customers in some 24 countries at the same time.

Designer sunglasses can be expensive, but lovers of luxury shouldn't let that deter them. Shoppers on a budget are best bypassing the trend conscious designs and choosing a classic pair of shades like the Joellen from Banana Republic.

I can just imagine Audrey Hepburn wearing these elegant sunglasses as she stepped off a Hollywood movie set. They're large but not oversized, offering sun protection while avoiding that awkward bug look so common in modern fashion. The frames also have a bit more substance to them than many contemporary styles. The thicker style is flattering to all face shapes, but strong enough to last some minor punishment.

The frames look black from a distance but they're actually a deep, deep blue. This gentler shade should be much more forgiving for pale-skinned beach goers. It also works as a neutral, while still being a little unexpected.

But the appeal of Banana Republic sunglasses goes beyond the surface. They're made from premium materials carefully shaped for the most comfortable fit. The gradient gray lenses also offer 100% UV protection, so they'll shield your eyes as well as filtering out the glare.

And well they should for the money. At $140 these Joellen sunglasses aren't cheap, but they'll stay in style long enough to justify the initial expense.

Why sacrifice style when you're on the beach? Banana Republic adds a bit of feminine flair to our feet with these Mayerhs Flip Flops.

The Mayerhs is one of those pairs of shoes that girly girls can't resist slipping on their feet. They'll be taken in by that large rose with its soft petals. Its metallic finish gives it more glitz than a traditional blush pink or bright red finish. It's not the sort of rose you'd ever see in a country garden, but it'll look beautiful when the summer sun hits it! A quarter inch heel offers a bit more style than a complete flat would, but it shouldn't give you any trouble on the sand.

That upper is made from leather so it'll feel fabulous on your feet. Banana Republic has cut corners on the lining though by using synthetic instead. It should feel just as comfortable thanks to the memory foam padding and cushioned insole, but your feet may sweat against this man-made material. The trade off, of course, is the price; in this case a relatively reasonable $59.50.

A flexible rubber sole outersole completes the Mayerhs. I can't imagine any girl wearing such feminine flip flops will be pounding the pavement, but this finish should provide a decent amount of shock absorption anyway.

Most of us will just care that these Mayerhs shoes are cute, but it's nice to know there's some substance behind that frothy design.

Banana Republic Karine Necklace Tee | Feminine Beaded Blue Cotton Blend T-Shirt

Most of us like to carry a T-shirt to the beach to pop over our swimmers once we emerge from the surf. For a more stylish alternative than your favorite oversized rock and roll T-shirt, look to this elegant Karine Necklace Tee from Banana Republic.

This T-shirt has a beautiful feminine look, with its beaded necklace detail around the neck and gentle pleated bust line. I love this subtle blue tone, which is much lighter than its midnight name suggests, but it's also available in a purple plum hue.

This soft top is made from a blend of cotton and modal. Though modal isn't a very well known material, it's an inspired choice for a T-shirt that will spend time near the water. The fabric, made from the reconstituted cellulose of beech trees, is water absorbent and resistant to shrinkage and fading.

On the flip side though, modal fabrics must be washed in cold water and ironed after washing, so if you're looking for a low maintenance tee this isn't it. It won't survive your regular hot water wash, and don't even think about throwing it in the dryer.

It might take a bit of work to care for, but I think the feminine style of this Banana Republic T-shirt helps to justify the effort, and the fairly high $59.50 price tag.

Banana Republic Morgan Sunglasses | Classic Women’s Aviator Shades

These Banana Republic Morgan sunglasses take me back to the days of Top Gun, a simpler time when Tom Cruise was a sex symbol rather than a Scientology crazed freak show. If you're feeling a little nostalgic too, perhaps these shades should be on your wish list.

While it's not 1986 anymore, these aviator frames are timeless. If you've got a heart-shaped face, which is wider at the top than the bottom, than these are ideal. You'll notice that the frames mimic that same shape, so they're most flattering for girls with these features. Don't be discouraged if you've got a different face shape though; this style is pretty forgiving and should suit most features.

And if you're looking for aviators, this is a pretty high quality pair. The frames are made from metal, and the lenses are polarized and guaranteed to provide 100% UV protection. Spring hinges, nose pads, and temple tips are the extra special touches that tend to be reserved for high end designer shades. There's a small signature monogram on the left temple, a subtle hint of luxury that's much more chic than a large obnoxious logo.

At $98 the Morgan sunglasses are still pretty expensive, but so long as you keep them in the complementary hard leather case they should last long enough to justify the price.

For sunglasses that refuse to bend to changing trends, look no further than these traditionally styled shades from casual American fashion label Banana Republic.

Not that the Anja sunglasses don't look modern; the bold rectangular frames, discreet Banana Republic monogram, and retro tortoiseshell coloring are right on trend. However, these looks aren't likely to date as quickly as the large frames or rhinestone embellished designs we see the stars wearing. Those celebrities can change their shades with the season after all, but most of us don't have the budgets for such luxury.

That's why the materials Banana Republic uses concern me a little. Its frames aren't the sturdy metals most designer labels use, but plastic. That won't worry you if you intend to wear your shades to the beach, or keep them protected in the hard case provided. But if you're the kind of person who stashes their sunglasses in a crowded beach bag, or has a habit of sitting on them, you may want to look for a more durable model.

At least Banana Republic hasn't skimped on safety. The European gradient lenses offer 100% UV protection to save your eyes from the sun's damaging glare.

Banana Republic has cut a few corners with the Anja sunglasses, but it only charges $98 for them. Providing you know how to treat them, that seems like a great price for a pair of classic shades.

Simple but chic, these Monika flip flops from Banana Republic can add style to your beach ensemble without compromising on comfort.

Flip flops are traditionally relaxed affairs, but this pair has a little more class than the average. Soft metallic leather strands are knotted together near your toes to create a look which is casually charming. It's such a simple idea, but it helps these flip flops look elegant enough to wear away from the beach. It's also got just a hint of a heel; this is enough to add high-class style but not enough to cause you to totter as you walk along the sand.

The Monika's appeal goes beyond the superficial though. Its sole is made from a flexible rubber outer overlaid with a breathable synthetic lining. This surface is packed with memory foam and a cushioned insole for the comfiest fit all day.

It's rare to find a pair of flip flops which gives us so much for such little money. My only complaint is the limited range of colors on offer. While this subdued metallic silver is lovely, a few more choices would help us really coordinate our summer wardrobes. After all, with a $20 price tag I'd happily snap up a few more!
