Marina West gives us a couple of options on the beach with this retro three-piece swimsuit.

I really like the concept of this swimsuit, but I think its execution lets it down a bit. The tiny white polka dots give it a bit of retro flair, which is only helped by the halter neck style and jaunty red bow. But that bow seems just a bit too large for the rest of the bikini, and its generous cups aren't very fashion forward.

When worn with the skirt you get a whole other set of problems. While this extra piece will hide the legs of self conscious beachgoers, it also won't really flatter their figures. It simply hangs straight down, without pausing to shape the female form. The bows on the side seem intent to add interest, but they just come across as childish. They do serve a practical purpose though, helping you get the very best fit from this beach wrap.

If you look for comfort rather than style you're not likely to be disappointed. The blend of nylon and spandex is sumptuously soft, and both top and bottom are fully lined. For $100 the quality is certainly there; I just wonder whether Marina West has invested enough in the style to convince beach bunnies to part with their cash.

They say that if you've got it, flaunt it. But if you're not sure that you do, you may feel more comfortable covering up on the sand with this modest three-piece swimsuit from Nygard Collection.

While you're in the water you'll enjoy the conservative halterneck style tankini and generously cut bikini bottoms. Once you're back on dry land you can cover up your pins with the matching sarong skirt.

The style is classic but a bit too conservative for young beachgoers. The striped bodice gives way to a plain black tankini body, but the stripes are picked up again in the skirt. This brown color scheme is probably the most fashionable, but if you prefer a bit of color you can also get it blue.

It may not be very fashion forward, but at least Nygard Collection gives us quality. As with every Nygard Collection outfit, this three-piece swimsuit is made from superior materials to ensure it lasts at least few summers. That helps to justify the fairly significant investment of $126.

My biggest problem here is not with the style, but the sizes on offer. With sizes ranging from an eight to a 12, Nygard Collection forgets about the larger beachgoers who would probably gravitate towards this kind of classic style. Meanwhile the petite girls who can fit into them are likely to be more interested in showing some skin!

It Figures Hip Hider Three-Piece Skirtini Swimsuit | Blue Tankinis & Skirt Swimwear Set

It Figures offers an alternative to skimpy swimwear with its bathers made for more self conscious beachgoers.

This Hip Hider does more than hide hips. The tankini tops camouflage untoned tummies, while the swimsuit skirt conceals dimply thighs. It all sounds great in theory, but I'm not sure about the execution.

This swimsuit hides flaws really well, but I don't think it makes the most of its wearer's strengths. The tankinis and skirts just seem to hang there, without any shape or structure. A little creative cutting could have made this set a lot more stylish, rather than decidedly average.

I'm also concerned by the sizing. The tankini tops will comfortably fit a C cup. That may be the size of an average woman, but the girls who want to wear these Hip Hider swimmers are likely to be larger than the average. It's a shame that this swimsuit's target market isn't really catered for.

I appreciate the choice of tankini tops though; the plain blue one plays it safe, while the pretty floral alternative has a little more personality. I also like the skirtini's design on a practical level. While it's not the prettiest thing, by attaching brief bottoms to the skirt we need not worry about any indecent exposure in the waves.

At $101, this It Figures swimsuit represents value even if it doesn't really represent style.

Aloha brings a taste of Hawaii to any beach with this floral print three-piece bikini.

The bold floral print really pops against the black swimsuit fabric. The pink blooms are lovely, but the pattern is also a bit dated. If you're not fashion conscious you'll be able to appreciate it on its own merits, but more style focused beachgoers may look to something a little more contemporary.

If you love the look, no doubt you'll be delighted by the sequins which are dotted across the bikini top. Again the treatment isn't very modern, but the shiny discs do add a bit of glitz. At least, they will while they stay on. If you enjoy the waves, I don't expect that to be very long. At least the design doesn't rely on their inclusion, so once they fall off you won't lose too much.

This is a modestly designed bikini, which makes it something of an anomaly. While most swimsuits of this style aim to show off skin, the cut of this bikini is quite reserved. The bikini bottom offers more coverage than most, while the skirt makes the swimsuit even more modest when you're on the sand.

If you love it it's worth noting that no matter what size you order, the top's dimensions remain essentially the same. It'll suit a B to a C cup, so if your body's larger or smaller than the average this probably isn't the swimsuit for you.

If it is though, you'll find it reasonably priced at a little under $80. That's great value for a bikini that goes beyond the standard two pieces.
