And it is large with its whopping 24 inch diameter. It might prove overwhelming for small children, but it does allow adults to join in the fun. I think that makes it a better family proposition than the smaller beach balls we see.

This Intex ball plays on our nostalgia, with its six brightly colored panels. It looks just like the kind of ball we might have played with as children, which makes getting it for our own children that much more tempting.

Also tempting is the price, a real bargain at $5.48. But remember the old adage that you get what you pay for. It seems that Intex knows its ball won't last long, because it sells it packaged with repair tape. That should suffice if your puncture is in the middle of a panel, but you'll struggle to mend the hole if your ball comes apart at the seams. And if the ball's getting regular use, that's a distinct possibility.

Still, perhaps we can't get too upset when such a cheap ball gives up the ghost. After all, it won't cost too much to replace it.

The old adage that you get what you pay for rings true here. The polyester netting seems strong, but it's also quite stiff. It's not the sturdiest of nets, and it's an inch skinnier than regulation. That's disappointing for a net that claims to suit competition, but it probably won't bother the average beach goer.

For them, a volleyball net is simply a way to divide the sand for a game, and this Mikasa net does that job admirably. The aircraft steel cable running along the top is stronger than the cloth or nylon cords we find in most nets at this price point, and it also helps you pull the net nice and tight. It's specially treated to stand up to the salty sea air and the strongest spikes, so it should last for many heated games. It also folds up for easy carrying in your beach tote, which is more than we can say for the balls!

If you're really after a volleyball net of competition standard this one isn't it, but this affordable Mikasa accessory will probably do the job well enough to suit the average beach volleyball fan.

More than just a travel guide, this DVD leaves the bright lights of Hollywood and the Sunset Strip behind for the city's famous beach bike path, The Strand. This trail stretches from Temescal Canyon to Torrance Beach, some 22 miles away.

The video provides an insight into this area which is invaluable for tourists and local cyclists. Amazon customers who live in the region admit that they didn't realize just how far the bike path stretched, or know many of the facts relayed by host Angel Reed. Once you're on your own bike and soaking up The Strand in the flesh, no doubt these fascinating tidbits will come flooding back.

As a Broadway dancer, Angel Reed doesn't have the polish of a seasoned travel program presenter but she makes up for it with her bubbly personality. Her bright and sunny nature helps to make this travel program more engaging.

The DVD is on the short side though, with a run time of just 23 minutes. It's fairly affordable at $13.98, but I can't see it stacking up to multiple viewings. That's not its job though. Instead it looks to inspire cyclists to discover Los Angeles beach bike path for themselves. If the enthusiastic reviews are any indication, this Treasures Lifestyle & Travel Show does its job.

It's easy to suggest that the ultimate beach body would be better achieved by getting off the couch rather than sitting and reading a book, but most people who've read Melissa Perlman and Erica Gragg's tome swear by it. So do the celebrities that flock to the writers' Amansala Eco-Chic Resort and Spa in Mexico to undertake the same bootcamp program.

This book takes the regime practiced at the Mexican resort and recreates it for the average woman, without the star salary. The targeted workouts need no special equipment; you only require a willing body and attitude to take on the circuit training, core strengthening, and yoga exercises. The meal plans, with recipes included, help you fuel your body with nourishing, slimming, and tasty Mexican and Asian dishes. There are also relaxing mind exercises designed to help you stay committed to your goals, and do-it-yourself spa treatments which require nothing more than the goodies in your grocery cart.

Bikini Bootcamp's interactive nature seems to be the key to its success. Its fans say the program is both challenging and fun, and it gets results. Its critics have suggested the approach is a little hippie for their tastes, but if you can embrace its new age vibe this book might hold the secrets to your summer slimming success.

This beach game is like a cross between tennis and ping pong; the small paddles resemble ping pong rackets but just like tennis there is no table required. There's no net or court needed either, making Pro Kadima more of a relaxed, spontaneous game. You'll likely debate whether a particular play was in or not, but that healthy rivalry is all part of the fun.

The paddles look sturdy enough with a natural wooden finish or neon colored coatings. Unfortunately the creators can't guarantee which ones you'll receive, which is a shame if your heart is set on this fun purple and green set. The paddles seem strong, but you may want to keep them clear of the surf. One customer has reported that her paddles disintegrated after becoming wet, which seems like a major flaw for a beach toy. This is definitely a game to play well away from the waves.

At least this game is inexpensive at less than $15 for two paddles and a ball. That should be some comfort should your Pro Kadima set meet a nasty end.

This outdoor volleyball ball is crafted from soft touch composite leather, so it feels gentler on the hands than many professional balls. If you're a serious athlete that could be a disadvantage, but if you're playing with your family or friends it'll be a real plus.

Thankfully this softness doesn't mean the Spalding ball isn't strong. One customer reported that her ball survived a few run ins with a rusty barbed wire fence, so it seems it's almost as durable as Spalding claims. Just don't kick it directly as this customer's playmate did! It'll survive regular game play but it's not completely invincible.

Nevertheless, the hardy design means we're not restricted to the sand; we could set up an impromptu game in a parking lot or our own backyard.

The traditional 18 panels are machine stitched into this Spalding ball. That helps it fly true from a spike or serve. When a ball delivers that, I'm not sure amateurs really need to spend money on professional equipment. At $12, this Spalding King of the Beach ball does the job without leaving a large dent in our wallet.

It looks something like a tennis ball, but when you take the Waboba on the water you learn what it can really do. While other balls sink like stones when they hit the drink, the Waboba actually bounces back!

At least it does in theory. The technique required is something like skipping stones, which can be difficult for kids or the uncoordinated to master. That can prove frustrating at first, but I hear that once you get the hang of it playing with the Waboba is lots of fun. Of course, you could always just throw the Waboba about like a traditional ball; it's made from polyurethane so it'll float if dropped in the water.

The makers claim the Waboba was made to handle summer punishment, but some customers complain that the cover slides about and accumulates sand. That sounds a bit inconvenient, but not a real deal breaker.

The Waboba Extreme is one of three Waboba balls, and apparently the most versatile and exciting. It'll bounce the highest and skip the farthest. That makes it a lot of fun, but also a bit of a hazard too. Players should make sure they have their guard up, because the ball can hurt on impact!

If you're game though, playing with the Waboba Extreme is a fun way to pass time at the beach.

It's easy to get daunted around kites, particularly if you're out of flying practice. But this kite is an entry-level model, so it should start quickly soaring with just a little help from a gentle sea breeze. This colorful beauty measures 2 x 6 x 32 inches, so it should look pretty majestic once it's up in the air too! If you feel it getting away from you, simply add a tube tail to slow things down.

$19.99 seems pretty cheap for a kite, but don't assume this is a flimsy beach toy. The colorful wings are made from lightweight ripstop nylon, while the rods are crafted from fiber glass. This material promises to be virtually indestructible, which is a good thing if the kite takes a nose dive!

I can't promise that this kite will reignite your childhood passion, but flying it should make a nice change of pace from throwing about the Frisbee. And unlike swimming, it's something you can comfortably do on the beach all year round!

The videos are hosted by Nikki, who knows all too well the pressure women feel before their nuptials. She became a certified fitness expert to get in shape for her own destination wedding, and now she's passing on her tips to other brides-to-be. Her work-outs are diverse, with exercises to improve your cardio fitness and work on several muscle groups at once to cut your workout time in half. You can't spend all your time exercising when you've got a wedding to plan after all!

The DVD was shot on beautiful Mexican beaches; these stunning settings serve to remind brides of their goals while appearing much more appealing than any gym! While the visuals are taken care of, the soundtrack leaves a lot to be desired. There is no music, which makes it hard to establish a good workout rhythm. The instructor suggests you could play your own, but doing so makes it difficult to hear her instructions. At least it also drowns out the background sound of wind on the recording!

This isn't the most polished workout DVD, but it's also not the most expensive either at $19.99. If you're desperate to get that perfect bikini body for your big day it might be worth a try.

Flingo is something like an updated version of beach volleyball. The ball bounces between the players using an elastic Flingo cloth, which is almost like a tiny trampoline. It sounds like a fun way for the whole family to get fit, as it doesn't require a lot of special skills or strategies.

There are official rules, including court sizes and scoring systems, but I think most folks will be happy to just make it up as they go along.

Each Flingo set contains two Flingo cloths, a ball, and a plastic carrying case. This game has the potential to be great for groups, so it's a shame to see only two Flingo cloths included. I'd love to see the creators release a doubles set for barbeques or family get togethers.

Critics have embraced this game, which was a recent finalist for the best beach game of the year title. I'm a little more skeptical though, as I haven't spotted a lot of Flingo games going on at my local beach. But at least it's reasonably affordable at $23.80, which should be some compensation if it doesn't have staying power.
