As the mercury drops it becomes increasingly harder to drag yourself out of bed and pound the pavement. But summer will be here before you know it, whether your body is ready for it or not. Thankfully Karon Karter says we can get a hot bikini body in just six weeks using her handy guide.

Karter is a Pilates specialist based in Dallas, Texas. She written numerous books and been featured on The Natural Wellness Channel, so she should know her stuff. And judging by the positive reactions to the book, it seems she does. Her core-targeted excercises are designed to challenge people of all fitness levels. There are the Pilates routines Karter's famous for, as well as interval training to burn calories and increase cardio fitness.

This is a very approachable book, with an easy and lighthearted style and progressively more difficult exercises. According to its enthusiastic response it also seems to get results. But it's far from perfect. The nutrition guide will likely see you lose weight, but it's not as balanced as it should be. All too often the servings have too few calories, which is likely to leave followers listless and irritable. No matter what Karter says, a tub of yogurt is not an evening meal.

It's also disappointing that the cardio component focuses on treadmill work. Most of us don't have one at home, and we generally turn to books like this to avoid gyms. We could likely make up our own substitute interval program, but it's disappointing that we have to.

The Six-Week Bikini Countdown book is very cheap though at $19.95. I think a hot bikini body is worth that, don't you?

This ball is the same size and weight as the ones that professional athletes use. It's also made from tough polyurethane panels that are hand-stitched together to ensure their quality. And finally it's approved by the International Federation of Volleyball, a credential that most commercial balls can't boast.

In fact, it seems the only real difference between this ball and the ones the Olympians play with is the price. At $51.45 it's a mid-priced volleyball, not cheap but certainly affordable for its quality.

Whether it's worth the money probably depends on your budget and your passion for the game. If your finances are tight, or you only get to the shore on the odd occasions, then a cheaper ball will probably serve your purposes. However if you play regularly, or simply have a little more to spend, you'll appreciate the longevity a ball like the Molten BV-5000 provides.

It's after time that this ball really comes into its own. That's the point where other balls bust, or start to stiffen. However the Molten's finish is so superior that it will actually stay soft after several summers of wear. If you can afford it, I'm sure your hands will thank you for splurging a little!

There are also ground stakes and ropes to keep the net in place, and of course a cloth-covered ball. This volleyball kit is perfect for a game on the sand, but I wouldn't pack it away once the weather cools. The stakes will work just as well in the grass, so you could erect the net in the backyard or take it to a park for some practice in the off season.

At $39.99 this volleyball set is very cheap, although you do get what you pay for. Both the net and the poles are made from PVC, rather than hardier materials. That keeps the cost as well as the weight down, but this kit isn't built to survive time out in the elements or any serious punishment. Still, for that price it won't be too expensive to replace the set in time.

Do ordinary beach balls seem a bit pedestrian to you? Then this 12-foot beach ball from Outrageous Ventures may be just what the doctor ordered.

This durable and daunting beach ball is enormous. When it's blown up it'll measure around 10 feet and weigh 12 pounds, so it'll dwarf adults and threaten to squash small children in its path. Such an intimidating toy could cause chaos on your local beach, but make for a whole lot of fun if you've got plenty of open space. Perhaps you could use it for a giant game of football or a massive game of catch!

It looks gimmicky but thankfully it doesn't need giant equipment to inflate it. Any ordinary air compressor or pump will do. I certainly wouldn't suggest trying to blow it up with your mouth or a humble foot pump!

The impracticality of this massive beach ball is part of its charm, but I'm not sure such a novelty item should come with such an enormous price tag. I suppose we're getting plenty of ball for our dollar, but around $150 still seems steep. After all, the occasions that call for such a lot of beach ball are pretty limited!

Acclaimed New York based personal trainer James Villepique puts women on the path to their perfect beach body with this fitness guide.

The book's exercises are designed to help readers fit into their favorite swimsuit, whether it's a conservative tankini or a more revealing thong bikini. There are workouts to target the thighs, toning routines for abs and obliques, and a comprehensive gluts workout for achieving an enviable bikini butt.

Happily the exercises aren't offered in isolation. The guide also has workout plans, which string together the repetitions for an all-over exercise plan, meal schedules, and more general dietary advice.

This really is a guide for beginners looking to get off the couch rather than anyone already interested in fitness though. Villepigue's exercises are likely to be too easy for anyone who's already enjoying a fitness regime. But novices are likely to be attracted to the simple equipment required and the well-rounded routines which are challenging for beginners, but still achievable.

Given their ease, I'm not sure whether this fitness guide will ever give readers the body of the woman on its front cover. It just doesn't push women far enough. But anyone who sticks to the plan should see some improvement by the time they're ready to slip into their swimsuit.

When you're a kid every bicycle has a basket. These woven wicker carriers were perfect for holding dolls and books and anything else you wanted to take to a friend's house. But when you grow up the baskets seem to disappear, almost as if bike makers think we've lost the need to transport anything on our travels. I miss those wicker baskets, almost as much as I miss my youthful stamina. Avenir's brought them back though with this retro wicker carrier.

This wicker basket attaches to your bike with black Velcro straps. They're easy to use on the right bike, but it's worth noting that you really need the right bike. The straps are a little short, so they're best suited to single-speed bikes. Some people with multi-speed bikes have managed to attach it, but with all those speed and brake cables getting in the way it's a lot tougher. And if you do manage to affix it, be prepared for it to come loose when you hit a speed bump!

It's also worth noting that this basket is on the small side. It's about 10 inches wide, seven inches deep, and six inches high. You may be able to fit a thin beach towel and flip flops inside at a pinch, but if you've got a plush beach blanket you may struggle. It's fine for carrying the bare basics to the shore, but if you've got some serious swag you may need to tote a backpack as well.

It's got its limitations but I love this wicker basket's retro charm, and its affordable price. $11 isn't a lot to spend on this cute after-market bicycle accessory.

This Spiral Club ball from Mikasa helps volleyballers improve their game, and look good while they're doing it.

The dramatic looks were the first thing that struck me about this volleyball. The yellow swirling design looks dazzling against the royal blue body, but it also serves a very practical purpose. The eight-panel style gives players a larger hands-on surface area, which makes it easier to control the ball and improve their game.

Customers describe the Spiral Club as a "strikers" ball, as it gives a nice, satisfying response when you hit it. That's great for striking specialists, but it also means this ball won't suit every player's game. The outer layer is thinner than other balls on the market, and some people complain that it's too light, and too unforgiving.

It's all a matter of personal preference though. Volleyball enthusiasts may want to play with it before deciding to purchase one, while novices are likely to be satisfied with the job it does.

I particularly like the way the seams are attached to the ball's body, thus trapping air between the panels and making it feel a little softer to the touch. Anyone who's suffered sore arms after a frenetic paced game of volleyball will appreciate this treatment. However some balls suffer from poor stitching, so you may want to look yours over before laying your money down.

Thankfully Mikasa isn't asking a lot for this volleyball. At $49.99, it's reasonably priced for serious volleyballers and anyone who just enjoys a game at the beach.

Water bombs are a lot of fun, but once you throw them you're left with little scraps of rubber to clean up. That will give these reusable water bomb splash balls the edge for eco-minded folks. You can easily stash them inside a beach bag, then simply soak them and you're ready for a bit of mischievous fun!

The balls are made from soft foam, but I still have a few hesitations about hurling these babies at people. They're recommended for anyone aged four and over, but I fear anyone so young may be hurt by the toy. Teenagers may also need to be supervised with the splash balls, lest they throw them too hard at unsuspecting passersby.

With a group of close friends though, these water bomb splash balls could offer great fun at the beach, pool, or simply on a hot summer day. It's disappointing that there are just four in a set, as I can imagine them being great for parties.

However at $7.99 a pack, they're not expensive enough to discourage us from grabbing two, three, or even more sets.

If you don't have the time to follow the six-week plan to the letter, you'll want to flick to the quick cheats. There are 24-hour emergency plans and even 10-minute quick fixes to help you feel confident in your skimpy bikini!

The beauty portion, which details exfoliation, self tanners, and even beach make-up, feels a little fluffy. But it's a minor gripe in a guide that's engaging enough to keep even the most loyal couch potato interested.
