Avenir Wicker Bicycle Basket | Cute Retro Bike Carrier with Velcro Straps

When you're a kid every bicycle has a basket. These woven wicker carriers were perfect for holding dolls and books and anything else you wanted to take to a friend's house. But when you grow up the baskets seem to disappear, almost as if bike makers think we've lost the need to transport anything on our travels. I miss those wicker baskets, almost as much as I miss my youthful stamina. Avenir's brought them back though with this retro wicker carrier.

This wicker basket attaches to your bike with black Velcro straps. They're easy to use on the right bike, but it's worth noting that you really need the right bike. The straps are a little short, so they're best suited to single-speed bikes. Some people with multi-speed bikes have managed to attach it, but with all those speed and brake cables getting in the way it's a lot tougher. And if you do manage to affix it, be prepared for it to come loose when you hit a speed bump!

It's also worth noting that this basket is on the small side. It's about 10 inches wide, seven inches deep, and six inches high. You may be able to fit a thin beach towel and flip flops inside at a pinch, but if you've got a plush beach blanket you may struggle. It's fine for carrying the bare basics to the shore, but if you've got some serious swag you may need to tote a backpack as well.

It's got its limitations but I love this wicker basket's retro charm, and its affordable price. $11 isn't a lot to spend on this cute after-market bicycle accessory.

I'm one of those people who loathe exercise, but looking at this cute pink cruiser from 2 Wheel Bikes almost makes me forget all that. There's something so romantic about saddling up on a retro-styled bike like this and riding along beach boardwalks and jetties. At least in my head, it all seems so effortless and easy, hardly like exercise at all!

Of course in reality I'm likely to be puffing and panting, but at least this bike would look the business. It really is such a fun looking cycle, with its sugary pink frame and white-wall tyres. It's 26 inches high, which is perfect for most women, and the curved cruiser handlebars are easy to reach.

After a long day on the bike we most often feel it, but this cruiser's suspension seat is wide and padded so hopefully we won't smart too much!

This cruiser comes partially assembled, and it shouldn't be too hard for most girls to do the rest. It certainly doesn't take an engineering degree, but complete novices may want someone to check it out before going for a ride!

At $299.99, this bike represents a significant investment but it's also cheaper than most gym memberships. I know I'd rather take in beautiful beach vistas during my workout than the drab walls of any fitness center!

Garmin Edge 605 Bicycle Monitor | GPS Navigational Cycling Computer

Garmin is a leader in providing in car GPS technology, but can the brand help you out when you're biking around the beach? With the Garmin Edge 605 Bicycle Monitor, the label attempts to do just that.

I say attempts, because this piece of technology has been on the receiving end of some pretty scathing reviews. The problem here is high expectations, which Garmin fosters with its glowing product descriptions.

Garmin claims the computer provides turn-by-turn directions, but it neglects to say that customers must purchase an additional City Navigator Map card to activate this functionality. This card costs an additional $100, which should be factored into the price.

Once you have this card, there's no guarantee that you'll be happy with the results. The unit takes a significant amount of time to plot a course, which when loaded often isn't the way cyclists would travel.

Unlike in-car systems, the device also doesn't provide spoken directions as Garmin suggests. This is disappointing, as when we're biking around the beach we probably want to focus on the coastal vista rather than a computer screen.

The ability to set the backlight level is handy, but it's unfortunate that these personal settings aren't remembered every time the unit's started up. I also like the ability to download other user's favorite routes through Garmin’s online Motion Based community, but there are limitations here too. The unit will only hold one route at a time, a real disappointment for folks preparing for vacation.

You'll need to make sure you're riding on good, smooth roads too as the straps aren't very strong. It just takes a few bumps to dislodge the unit. Adding some Velcro may solve the problem, but should you really need to make adjustments to a unit costing almost $500?

This system certainly doesn't do as much as an in-car system, but it does tell you where you are. If you're cycling around an unfamiliar coastal strip, that may be enough to ensure you don't get lost!

There are few things more relaxing than biking on the coast, but unless you're lucky enough to live near the beach getting your cruiser to the shore can be a hassle. Hollywood Racks takes the stress out of beach biking with its handy Gordo car rack.

This clever rack easily attaches to most vehicles, so you can simply drive your bike to your favorite beach trail. It's disappointing that Hollywood Racks doesn't tell us which vehicles its racks aren't suitable for though, as no one wants the hassle of returning useless goods they've bought online.

If you do have one of these mystery vehicles though you'll be happy with how simple this bike rack is to use. It comes fully pre-assembled, so you need not have a degree in industrial design to put it together. The padded rack then easily attaches to your trunk and detaches once you've lost your enthusiasm for fitness!

If you do need some extra motivation, it's worth noting that the Gordo has space for two bikes. So why not convince your bestie or that guy you've had your eye on to come cycling? It's always much harder to back out when you've made plans with others!

The team from Treasures Lifestyle & Travel Show takes us to Los Angeles with this information and entertaining travel DVD.

More than just a travel guide, this DVD leaves the bright lights of Hollywood and the Sunset Strip behind for the city's famous beach bike path, The Strand. This trail stretches from Temescal Canyon to Torrance Beach, some 22 miles away.

The video provides an insight into this area which is invaluable for tourists and local cyclists. Amazon customers who live in the region admit that they didn't realize just how far the bike path stretched, or know many of the facts relayed by host Angel Reed. Once you're on your own bike and soaking up The Strand in the flesh, no doubt these fascinating tidbits will come flooding back.

As a Broadway dancer, Angel Reed doesn't have the polish of a seasoned travel program presenter but she makes up for it with her bubbly personality. Her bright and sunny nature helps to make this travel program more engaging.

The DVD is on the short side though, with a run time of just 23 minutes. It's fairly affordable at $13.98, but I can't see it stacking up to multiple viewings. That's not its job though. Instead it looks to inspire cyclists to discover Los Angeles beach bike path for themselves. If the enthusiastic reviews are any indication, this Treasures Lifestyle & Travel Show does its job.

Pacific Shorewood Women’s Beach Cruiser | Blue Vintage-Style Girl’s Bike for Beach Riding

The image of biking along sandy dunes in the sunset is so appealing, that's why this nostalgia-inducing bike caught my attention.

It's built especially for a woman's frame at 26 inches and has those neat cruiser-style handlebars that are reminiscent of the bike's kids rode around in the 50s.

It's particularly comfortable because of the width of the seat and the fact that it's cushioned. The frame has also been made so that you sit more upright than you would a regular mountain or road bike.

The pedals are even crafted so that you can use this bike barefoot, which fits well if you'll be riding along soft sand.

It also features a chain cover so that you don't have to worry about your pants or the ribbons from your espadrilles getting caught in the bike chain.

If only this bike came in more colors, like a bubblegum pink. It does have the iconic white front and rear fenders and white -wall tires.

The bike functions with hand-operated brakes and 7-speed twist gears on the handlebars. Though this lady couldn't ever go too fast. That wouldn't be the point of beach-cruising!

Apparently the days of carrying your boom-box to the beach are over. iHome, the master of iPod transport, has come up with the iH85, or iHome2Go Cycler Bike-to-Beach Speaker. It's shaped like a water bottle so it can fit on to the carrier that most bike frames come with.

The water-proof container is pressure sealed and impact resistant so you can slip your iPod safely inside, ride along, and hop to the beach without worrying about sand messing with the hardware. The separate wireless controller fits nicely on a provided attachment for bike handlebars.

Transportable iPod speakers don't seem to be able to produce a lot of sound, which may be a concern for this product since it has only one speaker driver. You have to find the balance between blow-out, annoy-your-beach- neighbors and I-can't-hear-it-over-the-waves volume.

This gadget does require AA batteries, which can add up to the cost of using this thing if you don't have a battery recharger. A power adapter recharges only your iPod if you're listening indoors. The design of this product is certainly well thought out. Though iHome recommends you don't use your iTouch or iPhone, which could make this product out of date for some.
