Roxy embraces its feminine side with these Hobo Surf Sand Flower boardshorts.

Its name is complicated and a real mouthful, but there's little to these swim shorts, literally! These shorts certainly live up to their name. They show a whole lot of leg, so I hope yours are toned, tanned, and not still carrying any extra Christmas kilos! The skimpy design won't suit self conscious sun lovers, but it's perfect for girls who love to show off on the sand.

Board shorts are often pretty androgynous apparel items, so I'm thrilled to see a pair with a more feminine design. The dainty cut-outs make the scalloped hemline look a little like lace. However it's much sturdier than this popular accent. Just what you need when you're spending time in the waves! I also love the pop of color the striped waistband provides. If you want more color you can choose neon berry over basic black, but personally I think this saturated hue takes things a step too far.

There's not a lot of material here, so I think the Hobo Surf Sand Flower swim shorts are priced just right at $48. Is there a place for them in your summer wardrobe?

NRS Kern Board Shorts | Budget Basic Tan Womens Swim Pants

NRS opts for classic good looks over fashion forward flair with these Kern board shorts.

There's not a lot to get excited about here, but women who don't bow to trends will appreciate the Kern's classic styling. The shorts are mid-length to avoid being too flashy and made from traditionally toned tan polyester microfiber. The conservative color is classic but a bit pedestrian. The pink drawstring tie gives it a little pop, but it's not enough to draw admiring glances. I love the contrast, but the Kern is also available in a gentle gray tan, with a matching tie, if you prefer a more unified look.

The fabric's sueded finish makes these board shorts softer than the average pair of polyester microfiber swim pants. The material is a smart choice too, as it'll move with you in the water and dry quickly once you emerge from the waves.

However you do get what you pay for, and in this case it's a fairly thin pair of board shorts. The Kern's flimsy finish means it might not last as long as you'd hope a pair of classically styled swim pants would. However at just $39.95, it won't cost too much to get another pair once they're worn through!

Trina Turk’s New Banana Republic Line | Californian Designer’s Summer Capsule Collection

The capsule collections from Trina Turk just keep on coming. Hot on the heels of her Trina Turks and Caicos Collection for the Grace Bay Club Resort comes news of her latest line, a collaborative range designed with American leisurewear leader Banana Republic.

The 60-piece collection includes swimwear separates, beach towels and tote bags, and maxi-dresses and cut-off shorts for the times you're stepping away from the shore. The range's pricing is also more in keeping with Banana Republic's prices than Trina Turk costs. We can expect to pay around $60 for the beach towels while the bikini separates start from $58. Spending $120 on a pickering tote sounds a bit much to me, but I'll reserve judgment until I observe the carry-alls and their quality.

What I've seen of the collection seems like the perfect marriage of Banana Republic's safari style and Trina Turk's breezy Californian cool.

"We decided early on that the Palm Springs 'cocktails by the pool' lifestyle would be our key inspiration for the colors, styles, and prints," Turk explained.

Look for the Trina Turk for Banana Republic line in Banana Republic stores in America, Canada, Italy, France, Japan, Turkey, and South Korea this June. The retailer's online store will also dispense the goodies to customers in some 24 countries at the same time.

Volcom proves that board shorts can be sexy with these skimpy Chargers.

These aren't the board shorts to wear if you're self conscious about your thighs or ample derriere. While many swimming trunks cover these problem areas, the Charger lets them all hang out. Its short cut invites stares, so I hope your pins are tanned and toned!

The youthful style is a lot of fun though, with its hot pink color and bold black striping at the sides and waistband. I like the way the Volcom logo becomes part of the abstract design, rather than appearing tacked on.

Volcom's blend of polyester and elastane makes these board shorts a little stretchier than the average. That's a real plus for active beachgoers, as it'll flex while you're playing a game of beach volleyball or spending time in the surf. The material also feels comfortable against the skin, and is quick to dry once you emerge from the waves.

The elasticized waistband is a much cleaner alternative to a traditional drawstring. It gives us the support we crave with a minimum of fuss.

Volcom doesn't give us a lot of short for our dollar, but at $42 it's a relatively inexpensive pair of board shorts for confident young sun lovers.

Board shorts have long been relied upon by beachgoers carrying a few extra pounds. So it makes sense that plus-sized label Torrid is offering us its version.

Torrid doesn't try to reinvent the wheel here. Its board shorts are very basic, with only playful ties at the sides to liven up the design. It's easy to call them boring, but you might miss the smarts of this style.

Black goes with absolutely everything, so you can pair it with any swimsuit in your closet. It also never goes out of style, so you can continue to wear it for as long as they hold up. And knowing Torrid's commitment to quality, that should be some time.

They're also a great length for Torrid's plus sized fans. They're on the short side, but not short enough to make girls feel self conscious. They'll hide cellulite but still show enough leg. This is refreshing. Far too often plus-sized labels try to hide women away. Torrid takes a different approach and celebrates its fans and their curvy figures.

The price is right too at $34. That's pretty affordable for a pair of board shorts, especially one that promises several seasons of fun in the sun.

Insight Almost Paradise Board Shorts | Retro 80s Printed Microfiber Swim Pants

Insight is a bikini specialist, but it knows some girls want a bit more coverage from their swimwear. That's where these cheeky Almost Paradise Board Shorts step in.

I say a bit more coverage, because these board shorts are still quite short and skimpy. They'll admittedly hide more of the backside than any pair of bikini briefs though, so while they're hardly modest they do manage to maintain a bit of modesty! Personally I think that strikes the right balance. We all have our body problem areas, but we shouldn't feel we need to hide away completely on the sand!

The Almost Paradise takes us back to the 1980s with its bright retro inspired print. It appears like a bit of a fashion throwback with its neon colors and electrified design, but with the decade enjoying a fashion renaissance that's not entirely a bad thing. Just don't expect it to look as on trend in a few summers.

Considering that lack of longevity, I think these board shorts are priced a little too high at $81. However if you don't care for trends, they're well made from a heavy microfiber so they should last long enough for you to see value.

Billabong Cacy Board Shorts | Cute Blue Boy Fit Swim Pants

With many board shorts coming close to our knees, it seems that perhaps they should be rechristened board longs! Billabong delivers a pair of board shorts that are just as cheeky as their name implies with the Cacy.

The Cacy has a classic boy fit, but don't confuse that with being masculine. These board shorts show so much skin, that they'll certainly turn heads. Of course that means that you'll need decent pins to wear them!

So often sexy beach attire isn't comfortable, but that's not the case here. The waist is gently elasticized, so it'll stretch if you've indulged in a few too many ice-cream cones. The shorts are made entirely from polyester, which will make them feel as heavenly in the water as they do on dry land. The addition of a stretchier material such as lycra or spandex would have made them more flexible, and thus more comfortable for athletic beach goers, but this is a minor quibble.

Considering there's not a lot of material here, I think the Cacy shorts are a little too expensive at $74.99. However, this wouldn't be the first time we're paying a lot for a little when it comes to fashion!

Summer apparel items often feature a rainbow of colors, but few offer the mishmash of hues we see on these board shorts. Personally I love the combination of vivid squares, but I know it's too loud to suit all tastes. Hurley does too, so it's offered a few more subdued selections including dual-toned check prints and even an all black pair.

Its name suggests these board shorts are made from suede, but they're actually fashioned from recycled polyester. This material has all of the advantages of polyester, including a quick drying time and durability, but it's much greener. Fewer carbon dioxides being pumped into the air can only create cleaner beaches and oceans, can't it?

You might hesitate to wear such a loud pair of board shorts on the beach, but I think they'll be more versatile than you might expect. You could easily pair them with a matte colored bikini top. I can imagine it working wonderfully well with black, or even picking up one of the colors on the shorts. Either way, I think you'll easily get your $29.50 from these beach pants.
