Eugenia Kim Designs Baseball Caps for Timo Weiland | Colorful Beach Hat Capsule Collection

Council of Fashion Designers of America award winner Eugenia Kim looks to elevate the humble baseball cap to high end fashion statement through her new collaboration with Timo Weiland.

Weiland commissioned the acclaimed milliner to create a capsule collection of wide brimmed baseball caps. The hats feature seven of Timo Weiland signature colorful patterns, which he says were inspired by the art of Jean-Michael Basquiat. During Basquiat's time in Hawaii he began to paint with the blues of the ocean, the white and beige of the sand, the tropical greens, fuchsias, and tangerines he saw in the island's foliage, and the deep blues of the night sky.

Weiland added that his "vibrant prints and colors, combined with our playful, optimistic silhouettes gave way for the perfect partnership with Eugenia's quirky sense of style."

I'm not sure anything is truly perfect, but there's a lot to like about this collaboration. I've never been a great fan of wearing baseball caps on the beach as they don't offer the same level of sun protection that wide brimmed hats do. But the unusual brim we see here is making me change my tune. Notice how the image shows the cap protecting the sensitive skin of the ears and around the eyes. I love it when fashion is smart as well as stylish!

As with so many designer collaborations the biggest stumbling block is the price. At $195 these hats are significantly more expensive than the average baseball cap, so you'll have to be utterly smitten to indulge.

Jessica Simpson puts style first with this floppy hat from her fashion collection.

At first glance this crochet hat looks like the ideal combination of sophistication and sun smarts. However when it comes to the latter, we're sadly let down. I love the look of the crocheted paper straw, but its distinctive holes will let in UV rays. On a cover-up or swimsuit we could simply lather on the sunscreen underneath, but it's a lot harder when it comes to headwear. Your hair will provide a little protection, but I still expect sunburned scalps.

This sunhat's brim also isn't as wide as I'd expect. Customers have reported that it doesn't adequately shade the face and neck, which makes it a bit useless in my books. While we've always got sunscreen on hand to do the job, why wear a hat if it doesn't provide adequate protection?

I guess there's a case to be made for style, but personally I expect a hat can look good while it's keeping the sun's rays at bay. That's especially true for the price, which at $38 is no bargain. Jessica Simpson fans and anyone who's more fashion conscious than sun smart might lap up this crocheted sunhat, but frankly I expect more for my money.

Scala Sewn Ribbon Sunhat | Classic Black Crushable Banded Women’s Hat

Scala serves up classic style with a healthy dose of sun smarts with this Sewn Ribbon hat.

Despite its name, this hat isn't made from regular ribbon at all. Instead strips of polyester have been sewn together to create a subtle stripey look. The choice of material may not be as luxurious as a satin ribbon, but it's very smart. It ups the sun protection factor to an impressive UPF 50+, so you needn't worry about burnt scalps or other UV damage.

The fabric is also pretty easy to keep clean. While major marks may be a challenge, small spots can simply be wiped away with a damp cloth. The soft fabric also makes this hat ideal for storage. You can squash it up inside a beach bag or closet during winter, then pull it out again and it'll be good as new.

This Scala hat doesn't have the most exciting look, but it has a classic appeal. I particularly like the wide brim, which while stylish also helps shade your face, ears, and neck.

Black and brown hues have an evergreen appeal, but I'd prefer something with a bit more pop for summer. The color palette may leave a bit to be desired, but for $34.99 Scala offers genuine value.

This classic baseball cap is fitted with a long flap for extra neck and ear protection. Just like the rest of the Coolibar range, the hat and its flap are rated UPF 50+ for superior protection.

While the flap is smart I concede that it's not a very fashionable feature. Thankfully it's removable though, so you can leave it at home if you prefer. Just remember to slather on the sunscreen if you do!

Without the flap, this sport cap does lack a little individuality though. Its simple embroidered tree logo is nice enough, but it doesn't hold a candle to the marques of more fashionable labels. Its colors too are fairly pedestrian, especially for warm weather. I suppose they'll happily work with any swimsuit, but more vibrant color options would make the hat feel more contemporary.

There are some hidden practical perks though, including the oversized brim with dark colors underneath to absorb reflected light. The elastic back offers the most perfect fit, while the breathable quick drying polyester fabric should be comfortable to wear even on the stickiest of summer days. However unless that neck flap is to your taste, I'm not sure you'll get value for your $35.

Jessica Simpson shows us her knowledge of headwear goes beyond her reliable cowboy hat with this summery sunhat.

This multi stripe floppy hat has a fairly traditional design, but those wide rainbow stripes make it much more interesting than the average. There are four different color palettes to choose from, but this guava combo has won me. I love the way its earthy neutrals work with more vibrant summery colors to create a look which is timeless, yet ideal for the summer. However the blue jean hat could also be a tempting option for anyone who spends a lot of time in denim cut-offs!

Whichever colored hat you pick, you'll enjoy its practicality. Its wide brim measures more than 22 inches, so it'll keep the sun from your face and neck and provide better UV protection than the average. It's made entirely from paper straw, a woven material which is tough enough to survive the harsh conditions of the beach. It's also tough enough to last a trip through the washing machine, so you needn't stress if it starts to show stains.

At $38 this Jessica Simpson hat is an affordable way to complete your summer wardrobe and keep those pesky UV rays at bay.

Roxy Kinda Shady Hat | Wide Brimmed Pink Paper Straw Sunhat

Roxy takes care of style and sun protection with this Kinda Shady hat.

This is a rustic looking sunhat, with its woven paper straw finish and matching straw tie accent. Its pretty pink wash gives it a youthful energy. It almost seems like the natural straw has been spray painted, or perhaps even tie-dyed. If that sugary pink is a bit girly for you, you'll find the Kinda Shady with a white or tan wash. Or you could just stick with the classic natural straw version. Every sunhat is adorned by the metal Roxy badge, which is a chic way to stamp its surf pedigree.

The Kinda Shady is much more than a stylish addition to your summer wardrobe though. Its wide brim will keep the sun off your neck, ears, and shoulders, so it's very smart as well. Most stains will also wipe away, so you can keep this sunhat looking good for several beach seasons.

There's also an internal headband which sucks up sweat and helps the hat fit snugly. Beware though that this hat doesn't come in a variety of sizes. Instead it's "one size fits most," so if your noggin is on either side of average this may not be the sunhat for you.

The Headwear Association wants you to be sun smart on the beach this summer, so it's dubbed today, Friday June 17, Hat Day in the Sun. To celebrate, the organization will hand out wide-brimmed hats in a variety of American locations.

These hats were chosen to offer maximum protection to the face, neck, eyes, and ears. The association suggests women should follow the "more skin, more brim" rule, and increase the size of the hat's brim when their swimsuit becomes skimpier! A hat with a brim of more than five inches can offer extra protection for shoulders and necks, not to mention looking fabulous!

But it's not all about the brim. The Headwear Association also suggests looking at the hat's Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating, which indicates how much of the sun's powerful UV rays are absorbed by the hat's material. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends choosing a hat with a UPF rating of at least 30, but 50 is better!

Look out for The Headwear Association volunteers in pop-up locations around New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Lancaster, Charleston, Long Branch, Stockton, Boulder, and Detroit. Betmar gives us a taste of the Orient with this unique Origami sunhat.

This hat gets its name from its linen crown, which is pleated to resemble paper folded in the traditional Japanese style. It's very stylish, but it serves a more practical purpose. By using lightweight linen, Betmar has ensured our head will stay cool. It won't offer as much ventilation as a hat made of a meshed material or an open weave, but it's also much more stylish than these air-circulating options.

The natural-toned linen crown is complemented by a brown plaited straw brim. Betmar says this natural fiber is crushable and collapsible, but I'm not so sure. Straw is known for being brittle, so I can't imagine it'll put up with this kind of manipulation for very long.

While it may not live up to its claims, at least the Origami sunhat's brim is wide. Its ample inches will create enough shade to keep the sun off your face and neck, and sunburn at bay.

With its neutral colors and classic Bretton style design, this Origami sunhat promises to be a wardrobe staple if you treat it right. That longevity helps to justify its significant $49 price tag.

Mott 50 Sun Protective Clothes & Hats | UPF 50 Rated Beach Apparel

We're all told to don a T-shirt, cover-up or wide brimmed hat if we want to avoid sunburn on the beach, or more serious skin damage. While these items of apparel and accessories will repel UVB rays, they aren't effective at keeping out those powerful UVA rays. These are the rays responsible for wrinkles and other signs of premature aging, and most importantly, skin cancer.

You could slather yourself in sunscreen, or you could indulge in some of the sun protective clothing developed by Mott 50.
