While it takes inspiration from the coastal resorts of the French Riviera, its classic design wouldn't look out of place in any beach setting. The navy and white vertical stripes give the cover-up a traditional nautical feel, while the contemporary red grommets near the neckline bring just the right amount of French sophistication.

But this Riviera Stripe Tunic isn't just about looking good. Its material is a lot thicker than many of the cover-ups on the market, and its cuffed sleeves longer, so it'll offer a lot more sun protection than the average. It's substantial but not too heavy to wear in the heat of a summer's day. I also appreciate those handy pockets at the sides. They're perfect for stashing coins when you're making the ice-cream run, or keeping your hands warm when the sun sets.

By choosing heavy fabric and a modest design Nanette Lepore's made the Riviera Stripe Tunic the kind of cover-up you can wear away from the waves. It wouldn't look out of place at any beachside café or bar, so while it's a little expensive at $104 I think we'll get our money's worth.

Capelli Terry Cloth Cover-Up | Strapless Pink Polyester Dress

Capelli helps us cover up on the beach for less with this cute terry cloth dress.

Terry cloth isn't a material we often see in cover-ups, but like everything it has its advantages and disadvantages. It's dirt cheap, yet it feels as soft as more expensive fabrics against our skin. It's also absorbent, so it'll soak up any moisture your beach towel hasn't caught. In fact, you could probably just throw it over your damp swimsuit once you step out of the waves!

However it is quite heavy, which is both a blessing and a curse. Its thickness will become cloying on sweltering summer days, but you'll be glad for the extra warmth if you're swimming at sunset or out of season.

The styling is simple but quite cute, with a bandeau style top accented with a flirty bow. I also really like the pink color, although I concede that such a vivid shade won't find favor with everyone. And while the strapless design isn't very secure, especially if you don't have the curves to hold it up, it does allow for line-free tanning.

This casual dress isn't the kind of cover-up that will work too far away from the shore, but for a mere $20 I expect you'll still see value.

Trina Turk’s New Banana Republic Line | Californian Designer’s Summer Capsule Collection

The capsule collections from Trina Turk just keep on coming. Hot on the heels of her Trina Turks and Caicos Collection for the Grace Bay Club Resort comes news of her latest line, a collaborative range designed with American leisurewear leader Banana Republic.

The 60-piece collection includes swimwear separates, beach towels and tote bags, and maxi-dresses and cut-off shorts for the times you're stepping away from the shore. The range's pricing is also more in keeping with Banana Republic's prices than Trina Turk costs. We can expect to pay around $60 for the beach towels while the bikini separates start from $58. Spending $120 on a pickering tote sounds a bit much to me, but I'll reserve judgment until I observe the carry-alls and their quality.

What I've seen of the collection seems like the perfect marriage of Banana Republic's safari style and Trina Turk's breezy Californian cool.

"We decided early on that the Palm Springs 'cocktails by the pool' lifestyle would be our key inspiration for the colors, styles, and prints," Turk explained.

Look for the Trina Turk for Banana Republic line in Banana Republic stores in America, Canada, Italy, France, Japan, Turkey, and South Korea this June. The retailer's online store will also dispense the goodies to customers in some 24 countries at the same time.

Trina Turk has created a summery new capsule collection exclusively for the Turks and Caicos resort, the Grace Bay Club.

The new line, cleverly dubbed the Trina Turks' and Caicos Collection, features mix-and-match bikini separates, a plunging one-piece swimsuit, an ankle-length maxi dress, and a kimono-sleeved tunic cover-up. There are nine items in all, including halter-neck and bandeau cut bikini pieces.

Each item in the limited edition collection is patterned with a distinctive print inspired by the Caribbean island's penchant for fun in the sun and the Grace Bay Club's sophistication.

The pattern didn't take Trina Turk too far out of her comfort zone. As a Californian, she told The Jet Set Girls blog that she's always been inspired by the coastline and its ocean.

"For the Grace Bay Club swimwear print, we combined the movement of the turquoise water with an accent of bright coral from the resort's Mediterranean architecture," she explained. "Our signature hardware in gold with white enamel captures the sparkle of the white sand beaches found throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands."

The new Trina Turks' and Caicos Collection is available at a range of prices, from $76 for a pair of bikini briefs to $204 for the maxi-dress. The capsule collection is available for a limited time from Trina Turk boutiques, including its online store, and The Grace Bay Club.

Raviya's created a cover-up for middle-aged sun lovers with this Chiffon Tunic.

It's clear that Raviya understands its target market. The black color and loose fit won't appeal to young beachgoers, but they're just what the older demographic will admire. The classic hue is decorated with a soft foliage print. Personally I think the pattern is a bit dated, but if you don't care about following trends that's not likely to worry you. The rhinestones and beading around the neck give the tunic a final feminine flourish.

This tunic's bohemian style is very versatile. You could slip it on over a swimsuit at the beach, or pair it with a camisole and capris to swan around a resort or laze by the pool. It's important to note how sheer the fabric is though. While it's beautiful, it won't provide any real protection from the sun's harmful rays. Remember your lotion if you're wearing this swimsuit in the heat of the day.

While it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, those who do love it will enjoy a real bargain. This Raviya tunic is much cheaper than the average at just $32. For that price satisfied customers report excellent quality and craftsmanship, which is a lot more than this sort of money usually buys!

Becca Down to Earth Tunic | White Crochet Cover-Up Top

With fashion celebrating all things seventies, this crocheted Down to Earth Tunic from Becca is right on trend.

The intricate weave features a modern geometric pattern to ensure it's never confused with something your nanna might knit. The blend of nylon and spandex is also much more contemporary than the original crocheted cover-ups. The fabric makes sure you can ball it up and put it in your beach bag, secure in the knowledge it'll emerge looking as good as new. However while the use of spandex makes this cover-up more flexible than the average, it also means we need to take a bit of care laundering it. Hand washing it is really the only way to ensure it keeps its shape. I think this pretty cover-up is worth the effort though, don't you?

For far too long cover-ups have had a reputation as practical but dowdy sunsmart garments. This one doesn't offer quite the same protection from harmful UV rays, but it does have a lot more pizzazz. Just remember to slap on the sunscreen while you're enjoying the plunging neckline and fabric belt.

I'm already imagining how this white tunic would look against my sun kissed summer skin but you'll also find it in basic black if you prefer. Both colors are available for the not too exorbitant price of $72.

Athleta takes its cues from the east with this conservative Kali Kurta.

People in Afghanistan, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, and other eastern nations have been wearing kurtas for centuries. The loose-fitting tops are comfortable and conservative, which makes them perfect for beach cover-ups.

There's a hint of hippie chic about this cover-up, although I wouldn't call it fashion forward. It's a shame Athleta didn't embellish this kurta with embroidery as the original artisans would have. The black fabric might be timeless, but it's also pretty dull. Not even the white accents or the smocking at the back and bust can make this cover-up exciting.

Its greatest strength is its crinkled cotton material, which is lightweight to wear and breathable too. The fabric has a naturally wrinkled appearance, so you needn't waste your time ironing it. Taking care of it is easy too; just pop it in the washing machine, followed by the dryer, and you're done.

While it's not very stylish, $29.99 is pretty cheap for any beach cover-up, especially when it offers as much protection as this one. You'll see even more value if you follow modern girls from the East and pair this kurta with jeans during winter.

Ujena Rockstar Cover Up | Sexy Red Beach Dress

We're used to seeing Ujena helping us strip down rather than cover up. However here we see the beach label taking a break from its sexy swimsuits with the Rockstar Cover-Up.

Honestly this cover-up isn't too dramatic a departure. While it has more fabric than the average Ujena outfit, it's still smoking. It's a little shorter than the average cover-up, and the cut-out holes in the sleeves help it really sizzle.

Its skimpy cut may make more self-conscious girls nervous, but I wouldn’t dismiss it out of hand. It's just the right length for doubling as a cute top. Can't you just imagine how it'd look with denim cut-offs or a light pair of linen pants? For added versatility we can wear it with the scoop neck in the front to attract attention, or the back for a more demure appearance.

No matter how you wear it you'll appreciate the soft poly spandex fabric, which resists wrinkling. That means you can slip it on straight after laundering, or wear it from dawn to dusk and still look fresh.

It's no bargain, but at $69 it's also not exorbitant either. That's especially true if you can manage to work it into your wardrobe when you're away from the shore.

It might be patterned with feather graphics, but I can't imagine any showgirls called Lola wearing this Coba Cabana Tunic

The biggest problem is that this cover-up favors sun protection over sizzle. That's not entirely a bad thing in this day of dangerous UV rays and skin cancers, but a tunic called the Copa Cabana should have more sex appeal. Not even the tie beneath the V-shaped neck can inspire any interest. I think Luli Fama was shooting for floaty and feminine but instead it came out shapeless. A tunic that's relatively short should make our pulse race, but the cut is all wrong.

So is the print, which appears dated from the start. Rainbow colored feathers sound promising on paper, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. If it looks old-fashioned now, I hate to think how it'll seem a few summers from now.

Still, as with all Luli Fama products we're getting quality here. This cover-up is well made from superior materials, and that counts for a lot.

At $96 this Copa Cabana tunic is relatively affordable but still no bargain. Personally I think it needs to be considering its old-fashioned styling. However if you're less trend conscious you may see value here.

Trina Turk Marrakesh Tunic | Colorful Eastern Printed Cover-Up

Trina Turk serves up Middle Eastern style with this colorful Marrakesh Tunic.

The vibrant print on this tunic is really beautiful. It might not appeal to conservative sun lovers, but I think such a colorful design is ideal for summer. I love the way the black parts make all the shades pop. This unique pattern also refuses to bow to trends, so unlike so many rainbow colored prints it shouldn't date.

The pattern is dominant, perhaps even overwhelming, but it's not the Marrakesh's only selling point. The cut is also interesting and very fashion forward. The long sleeves fall softly, providing protection from the sun while allowing the cool breezes in.

The high neck and long sleeves are conservative, but the bottom half tells a different story. It's very short, falling to just below the backside. If your legs are toned and tanned you'll be happy to show them off, but you'll need to remember the sunscreen!

The blend of nylon and spandex feels luxuriously soft against the skin, and breathes well in the summer heat. However despite its high quality material, the Marrakesh is still a bit steep at $144. That price won't deter fashionistas, but if you're simply looking to shield yourself from the sun you can do it for less.
