The concept of tanning in a towelette is pretty exciting. The towels are easily portable, without the fear of leaks that comes with traditional self-tanning creams and sprays. Each towelette is self wrapped, and safe to use around sensitive areas like the eyes. They also come with endorsements from a host of celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, Lindsay Lohan, and Christina Applegate.

But these self-tanning towelettes aren't quite the miracles they claim to be. The viscose material breaks down quickly, so you're left with the towelette in tatters at the end of the application process. It also requires a certain skill to get the streak-free tan Comodynes promises. And even then there's no guarantee you'll be happy with the result. The solution tends to appear a bit orange on fair skin, which is inconveniently the type of skin most folks will want to tan!

It's also likely to take more than the single towelette that Comodynes tells us we'll need. Most customers report that it takes two or three wipes to get the job done, which makes the $38 price tag less economical than it first seems. At least the tan lasts for three or four days, so you won't need to reapply before the end of your long weekend!

The formulation is gentle, which makes it appropriate for users with sensitive skin. Some customers have reported that it feels a bit greasy, but if you use it in moderation you shouldn't feel that residue. Slathering yourself with sunscreen before you hit the beach could soon be a thing of the past according to a team of British scientists. The researchers from King's College in London are currently working on a pill to prevent sunburn.

The scientists have found that coral produces natural sunscreen compounds to protect itself from the sun's ultraviolet rays. They're currently analyzing coral samples from Australia's Great Barrier Reef to discover the genetic and biological methods the coral use to make their personal sunscreen. They'll then use this data to create a tablet which will protect human skin and eyes from those same damaging UV rays.

But the human implications are just the start of the pill's application. Scientists believe their research could also help produce ultra-violet tolerant crops, which would be resistant to sun damage in tropical climates. Just think what that would do for Third World countries in Africa and Asia. Suddenly these people in poverty could grow reliable, nutrient rich food sources.

The researchers suggest that their sunscreen pill may be ready to test within the next two years, and could be on the market in as little as five years. Are you looking forward to ditching the sunblock?

This spray is very simple to use it. You simply spray it on your hair, whether it's dry or wet, before and during your time on the beach. Used as directed, Phyto Plage claims your hair will stay shiny, and won't discolor. Anyone who's suffered that dreaded green chlorine hair should be pleased by that assurance! Water will wash it out though, so make sure you reapply it after a dip in the pool or ocean.

The organic nut in me loves the use of olive oil extract, calendula, willow bark, and other natural elements. However the full list of ingredients reveals a few chemical nasties including phenoxyethanol, ethylparaben, butylparaben, and other preservatives. That means this spray won't be very forgiving if you've got a sensitive scalp or aversion to chemical compounds.

Beauty companies always make lofty claims, but I feel a bit more confident in Phyto Plage. It's sold this formula since 1974, so surely someone would have called it out if it didn't work!

Beach Sexy contains apricot kernel oil, which nourishes and hydrates the skin while imbuing it with a subtle, fruity scent. It also features gentle tanning properties, which builds up with prolonged use. Of course this is less shocking than stepping out looking like an orange overnight, but I still have my reservations. Once your skin is as dark as you'd like, you either have to stop using Beach Sexy, or continue to tan. I wouldn't want to look like Snooki at the end of summer, but I'd miss the cream's hydrating properties! Perhaps three different lotions isn't so inconvenient after all!

While I'm picking it apart, I'm also disappointed that the built-in sunscreen only has an SPF factor of 15+. It's better than nothing, but really the bare minimum. It might work in some parts of the world, but if you're heading for the Caribbean or some other tropical hotspot I'd double up with a more effective lotion.

For $13.99, Victoria's Secret has created a cream which does a lot but costs very little. It'd be great for short summer holidays, but if you intend to spend a whole season on the beach separate products will be more practical.

This product isn't your standard coconut oil or tanning cream. It's billed as a tanning accelerator, a product which will achieve a deep tan in just a fraction of the time. It sounds like a lofty claim, but Supre's MagnaColor tanning technology helps the production of melanin so your tan gets darker, faster. But remember that health professionals frown on any time spent sun bathing, so this product can't really be regarded as sun safe. Still, it seems a smarter option than a regular suntan lotion.

It's also made more appealing by its extra, non-tanning properties. We all know how dry skin can feel once it's exposed to the sea breeze, so I'm glad Supre has added ingredients to condition, protect, and hydrate the skin.

Even if you can only afford a trip to the Jersey Shore, the scent of this Coco Beach lotion might help convince you that you're relaxing in the Tropics. At least if you close your eyes! The unique blend of tropical oils and extracts smells like the most beautiful mix of coconut, banana, pineapple, and vanilla. It's almost good enough to eat!

If you want to be really sun safe, bottle tans are a much smarter option, but if you insist on baking on the beach this Coco Beach lotion will help you get your tan faster, and for a reasonable price.

We've seen these soft, squishy silicone pads before, but not quite like this. While most enhancers are elliptical, these pads are shaped like triangles to sit neatly inside a skimpy bikini. I see the potential for an embarrassing incident if they don't fit quite right; particularly if you're planning on spending time in the surf!

John Frieda's emphasis on natural ingredients might seem a little new age, but it seems to work. Customers say the formulation is light and doesn't leave any build up as some hair products do. Girls with fine hair may need to dilute the conditioner with water to achieve the same results, but this is a minor inconvenience.

John Frieda's Beach Blonde Smooth Seas conditioner is pricier than the average at more than $10, but it also appears to be a hair product that does as it says it will. That performance makes it worth the expense over summer, although I wouldn't make it part of my year-round haircare routine.

Use tips include: exfoliating evenly before use. Applying the lotion as evenly as possible (always avoid knees and elbows) and rub it in fully.

I always apply a bit more in areas that I want to look a bit darker, like calves, shoulders and the decolleté. And never forget to wash your hands because orange palms are a dead giveaway to your beauty secret.

While there probably aren't many underwater runways in Miami, fashion industry favorite Make Up For Ever is highlighting their Aqua waterproof line at Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week Swim which runs July 15 - 19. (We'll totally be bringing you all the swimwear scoop!) As the makeup sponsor, a lot of swimwear designers will be using the brand's products on their models.

The range includes Aqua Eyes liner, Aqua Lip, Aqua Smoky Lash, Aqua Black and Aqua Creamliner. The model at right is wearing Aqua Eyes in #7L a terrific pool blue for a techno bright rim of color, but you can also smudge it all over your lids for a long-lasting eye shadow alternative. The eyeliner comes in a virtual rainbow of shades since it's often used on photo shoots.

The biggest downside to waterproof makeup is how hard it is to remove. You don't want to be left with turquoise eyelids for days, and waterproof mascara in particular is a toughie.

Being sort of insidery, Make Up For Ever also isn't available everywhere but you'll find it at Sephora, natch. The products range from $17 to the mid-$20 area, which is pricey, but they do last a long time and you'll notice the higher quality if you're used to drug store fare.
