Bikinis were invented by Louis Reard in Paris in 1946 and were named after Bikini Atoll, an island in the pacific. Bikinis were not really accepted into modern culture for sometime as they were considered to be too revealing. Bikinis were actually banned in 1951 from the Miss World Contest in the united states.

Opinions towards bikinis did begin to relax overtime and in 1960 a bikini buying spree was started by Brian Hyland's pop song "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" and bikinis gradually began to catch on and buying bikinis became more widespread.

Now bikinis are extremely popular worldwide. Bikinis are now highly popular in the media and appear in many surf and beach movies and who can forget the all time classic baywatch.

Ever since thier creation bikinis have gradually become more and more revealing and have obvious sex appeal. You can see a trend towards more revealing styles such as the slingshot, mini, teardrop, minimini, micro, and, what could be called a double g-string.
